High End P Bass

Hi all,

Looking to pick up a high end P bass. These are the models I’m considering:

- Fender Custom Shop Pino Palladino Precision Bass
- Mike Lull P4
- Maruszczyk Jake
- Fodera Monarch P

I’m leaning toward the Pino but I'm not attached to relic/Fender brand. If I could even find a Lull P4 I'd probably pull that way. I don't have any experience with the other two.

Anyone have experience with one or more of these and can weigh in?

On SADOWSKY’s site now..

a few thoughts - I bought a used Pino custom shop edition about 8 weeks ago. it's a very nice instrument. I've never owned a Precision before and wanted that tone in my quiver. I used it on a session recently and the singer/songwriter & mixer loved the tone (and my playing). that said...I've played it on my last 5-6 live gigs and have not been that happy. it has a great fat tone, but doesn't have the ability to get the mids that I like to make my solos stand out that way I usually get from my P/J or Faux-dera Yin Yang. I play through a Quilter and RevSound 112. I tried the TI flats and didn't like them. put on some Elixer 45-100 rounds that I like better.

I'd maybe go Lull as they are supposed to be amazing. Never played one though.
I played a Pino and it was a REALLY nice bass.
I have a Roscoe Classic P (gift from my wife) and while it's not up there with the one's you have mentioned, it's a darn nice P bass. My main player currently.

Fender custom shop Palladino if you don’t know if you will keep it as it won’t lose its value or USA Lakland if you intend to keep it.

Both same quality and awesome in every way.

I’m more of a punk rock bass player so I use my "beaten dog" p bass but if I was more serious and playing Fleetwood Mack songs, a Lakland would be my first choice without any hesitation.

Another vote for Lull.

Among all the Precisions I’ve tried, I’ll be honest about it and say I’ve not played a bad one or one that I couldn’t make into a regular player.

I’m familiar with Lulls and they remain my favorites.

I've played a couple of FCS Pino Palladino P-Basses over the years and they were stellar to be sure. However, I'm not a big fan of the whole relic'd thing ... primarily the feel of the necks while playing in Summer head & humidity. They can get a bit sticky (with the chemistry of my sweat, anyway). I play in the house band for a weekly blues jam and there's a bass player who attends regularly who brings a Moollon P-Bass. Just like this ...

Here's a used one for sale right here on TalkBass ...

I must say, the Moollons are really exceptional P-Basses, but I'm a lifetime achievement award cheapskate so they're "too rich for my blood".

String match can be tricky for a Pbass, I suppose because it is such a simple design.
