High Pass Filter (HPF) and Low Pass Filter (LPF) Mega Thread

Hey, @jb90, I wanted to apologize for ignoring you. I didn't realize that you were willing to learn about the topic. Fortunately, some regulars here had more patience than I and I want to welcome you to the "believers" side of the thread.

Just received a Broughton "Low+High pass filter".
Generally where should you run this in the signal chain? Pre compressor or right before the DI?
Depends on what your sonic goals are, and what other pedals might be in the chain. For example, many but not all compressors have a side-chain so they don't trigger from sub-bass frequencies but only react where it matters the most. Others have different settings for different frequency spectrums. Others again are full-range without any sort of frequency dial or a blend or whatnot, and might benefit from a HPF in front of them so they don't compress your sound too quickly/early. Same goes for overdrives or distortion boxes; e.g. the MBD2 by Damnation Audio or the SVPre by Broughton come with HPF circuity you can switch on/off or dial in to shape your distortion to taste. ("More natural drive tone", as Josh put it in his SVPre documentation.) With pedals like those, the HPF might possibly be better suited to come afterwards, but not necessarily.

Personally I use the L+HPF at the end of my main board as a makeshift cab sim because my main band plays ampless. On the second board used for my secondary band though, which plays through amps, I use a HPF right after the tuner to stop the compressor from overreacting, and the LPF at the end of the chain to filter out crud from distortion pedals in-between, then route the DI Through port to the amp.

So, yeah, it depends.

For the DIY version it'll likely have to go in a slightly bigger enclosure, there wasn't even room for a footswitch in that build.

Thank you for all replies! I almost lost my original question.. I am considering buying a Fender Rumble 500 or Hartke HD500 bass combo. As far as I understood from the answers, a combo should be better tuned and less prone to issues, but still I would like to know whether some of these models have a HPF. By the way, I just noticed that my Behringer Ultragain Mic500 preamp, which I rarely use, has a static HPF at 90 Hz, but I guess it is too high for bass, and being a static frequency, not so usable. Just to add some more detail, my only bass is an Ibanez SRH505F - semi-acoustic 5-string fretless, with piezo pickups, with a custom nut to support high-C tuning, and tuned with a high-C, instead of a low B string, flatwounds. It produces a tone inbetween a normal fretless bass guitar and an upright, so I guess requires a more special attention. Especially when I listen to it through headphones, it gives a lot of low-freq boom, which makes very hard to distinguish tones. I am wondering whether to invest in the EBS Stanley Clarke Preamp, which I find expensive for my budget, but it might be really usable?

It depends on what are the other pedals in your signal chain...and whether you focus on the HPF part or the LPF part of the pedal.

For LPF, the consensus is (I think) that it should come after dirt pedals, i.e. at the end of the signal chain.

With HPF, there is a debate: some place it at the beginning, some place it at the end. There are several legitimate considerations and you need to decide which applies to your signal chain:

1. HPF helps compressor (at least some of them) to work more efficiently so it should be placed before compressor
2. HPF takes care of the subsonic frequencies created by octavers and synth pedals - so it should placed after those
3. HPF at the end of the signal chain works as cab-sim pedal (one half of it) to sculpt the final tone sent to the mixer.
Etc.

As you can see, there are valid reason to do it either way...

My personal recommendation would be: if your signal chain contains octaver, synth or dirt pedal, I would put the HP/LP filter pedal at the end. If your signal chain does not contain any of these, you might put it towards the beginning.

Btw: my large pedalboard contains one HPF after octaver (before dirts) and HPF/LPF combo after dirt pedals (before DI box).
 
Many, if not most, Preamps do have HPFs built in but may call it something different. Mixing consoles typically utilize HPFs for vocal mics and are usually set from 80-100 Hz. That implementation is useful to help prevent microphone rumble and woofiness for vocals (the human voice doesn't go that deep compared to other instruments, even if your James Earl Jones LOL)...

I like a hpf on acoustic guitars and other instruments. Cleans them up a tad.

I use an HPF before my compressor so that it doesn't get triggered by sub sonic frequencies. My recommendation is to experiment with both and see which works better for you though.
 
Here's the frequency response of a Warwick LWA 500 with all knobs at noon. It has a very steep built-in HPF according to my measurements. IMO, this is an example of an amp that doesn't really benefit from the use of an external HPF for electric bass guitar. However, that doesn't mean that one's pedal board or other devices don't benefit from one. I do use an external HPF when playing upright through this amp.

What is the measurement when you boost the bass control by +3 or +6db? I'm curious how the LF response behaves.

Can you change the vertical scaling by any chance? Like maybe +12 to -12dB or +15 to -15?

I didn't save that measurement, but I can hook it up again at some point and take some more measurements if people are interested. I can say, though, that the bass knob doesn't really change the HPF behavior; it just shifts that line up or down. Here are the measurements with the bass at 10:00, 11:00, and 12:00 o'clock.

If you're wondering about how the bass control affects the upper bass/low mids, well, there is a low mids knob that has a stronger effect in that region. My measurements show the low mids being centered around 500hz, but Warwick claims it's centered at 800hz o_O.

No problem. Here it is again with +/- 15dB. It appears to be a 3rd order HPF; there's ~18 dB of drop from 60hz to 30hz.

The numbers published by the manufacturers are typically 'filtered' through a marketing department.
