High Pass Filter (HPF) and Low Pass Filter (LPF) Mega Thread

This has been a good read, and brought the subject back to basics for the only-semi-initiated! Like me...
I use a Broughton HPF, it's the first thing I hit coming out of my bass. It's followed by a SansAmp Bass Fly Rig, and into the amp, one of several, including a Bassman 300 Pro among them.
I set it from 45 to almost 60 Hz, depending... I'm still learning about it. After reading this last couple pages I'm going to try being a little bolder with my EQ...
That's why I, for example, don't like cabs which are tuned very low. I had 410HLF and it was a big mistake. I cut low end all the time because speakers stuck in higher volumes. Now I have custom made cab 2x12 ported cab with tweeter and it's 50-16k. For me it's the freq range of bass. 16k because highest G sound on 24th fret can have harmonics even about 8k so 16k is enough. So yes. I think you are in the good spot. If you have big cab 45-50, if small 50-55 or higher.

Looks like school’s in session by the geriatric equines of the world with free lessons to the citizens of Poland.
Unfortunately, the student will learn only when ready.
Beyond that, not worth the time, energy, effort or frustration.
And I feel that some users of this forum have strange problems with that I came from Poland... This called xenophobia you know? I'm ready but most of you just think that I'm a "stupid Pollack". It's your problem not mine. Free lessons? Phew... If you don't wanna help just don't. This forum is free and I can ask questions for free. I don't force anyone here to reply me. And definitely there are hundreds of great people here on this forum which don't judge people because of their origin.

Easy Charles, there’s no judgment. Only the facts ma’am:laugh:

Tone and choice of words are, unfortunately, everything when it comes to communicating via text.
I have to admit I was pretty put off by our polish friend's attitude early on. But the patience of those who have the subject well in hand won the day, and it turns out that really this guy's not a bad sort at all. He seems open to learn, and is probably a fun cat to throw down a couple beers with. I'd like to hear him play.

I'd also say that it's probably good practice to walk with some grace, whatever side of the perceived fence you happen to be on. Life is too short to entertain a short fuse with someone who hasn't finished having their chance. And that might be you, bro.

Agreed. I think that when he was made aware of who was in the conversation, he was respectful, and that is not always the case. It's a rare TB win.

On the other hand, when there are literally 2000+ posts giving anecdotal advice and proof in some cases about the positive worth of using such a device, it seems little more than provocative argumentation for an individual to suggest otherwise based on ignorance.

I think it's awesome that TB has such a large global community, and I'm glad that you seemed to find Andy's (aka agedhorse) comments so helpful. I wish I could've explained that stuff as well as he did.

Regardless, hello, my name is John and I like HPF.

Sometimes I don’t use it. Some people like it. Some people don’t like it. Sometimes I do use it.

To everyone that has contributed so much knowledge on the topic especially, one TB member, I now affectionately refer to it as the “Stumbo” pedal.

It works. It serves a valuable purpose. If that’s not evident, okay.

That is an unfortunate comment. It has nothing to do with all of the citizens of Poland.

I agree with you on this. At some point, I was considering reporting to admins as it seemed to me that he was not asking genuine questions but rather trying to get into an argument. However, Agedhorse's (and others') patience won the day (as Count Basie put it). One happy ending! :)

I have nothing but love and respect for the people, nation and culture of Poland. .

Personally I think this is one of the best things about Talkbass, the ability to meet and talk to people from all over the world. Everyone thinks and plays a little differently and we can learn from everyone. When I was seriously looking for a new rig I got advice from people close by and players on the other side of the world.

It got frustrating and finally annoying, yes. But there were holes in his argument, and once they were squarely addressed, voila! The guy changed his posture, sat down, and started asking questions.
People have personalities, and that can be a distraction if you let it. When you know they're missing the boat, you might have to help them find the right dock.

Jb90 mentioned a few times that cabs have a HPF. I think part of that mistake is thinking that the frequency plot of a cab shows that below the tuning frequency, it tapers off to nothing. Acousticly it's true, but what your not getting is you can still send those frequencies to the cab. This can damage a speaker because below the tuning frequency of the cab the driver has no loading behind it to control cone motion. It's as if it's just sitting there with no enclosure/cab at all. The electrical HPF is used to help cut those frequencies from ever being amplified in the first place, which in turn allows you to better use the bass side of the EQ.

Yes. I was looking for how to say this, but at the time I didn't want to try and get into technical info and cloud the water- but that's not that technical, it's pretty common sense, just signal flow.

jb90 is the best Polish bassist I curently know of.
Haha thanks man. I'm sorry all. I didn't want to make you angry about me and my posts. I just wanted to discuss different point of views, no offence for anybody. And thank you for understanding.

And that's make sense. Thanks. I thought that if cab has slope below low freq response then it works like a kind of HPF. And if it not work that way then you have right. Too much those freq can make some destruction for speakers and sound but always? I don't think so. With high volumes I never need to boost bass on my amp higher than flat. Sometimes even about 11 o'clock because more volume=more bass anyway. But yes. Any external HPF give you confidence for sure and that's the truth. I only wonder why bass gear manufacturers don't make preamps or amps with adjustable HPF or even LPF. Except Mesa and maybe less known companies probably nobody add HPF to their pedals or amps/preamps.
