High Pass Filter (HPF) and Low Pass Filter (LPF) Mega Thread

It isn’t just about the bass amp and cabinet performance. A HPF does help protect the speaker.

In a band mix, a HPF can make the bass louder. You hear the harmonics, the bass cuts through. Without the HPF, the bass frequencies can blend with other low frequency instruments and make the mix muddy. It’s about helping to separate the components of the mix.
But don't you think that you do that with just don't crank up bass but cut and boost appropriate midrange which will be more usefull for your sound that cut freq which amp cut with built-in HPF and cab won't reproduce anyway? And most bass knobs in amps work like a LSF anyway so you can turn down those sub-bass without drastic thing which HPF is and without phase issues. Most of the amps can hold bass on 12'o clock on full gain and volume settings. I tried it on small combos and on bigger stacks which can be even boosted in low end a little bit and nothing wrong happend. And you can still hear yourself, as you said, in harmonics which are high-bass, mids and high mids! Distortion in low end is about 50hz and below. Most of the cabs have HPF on 45-50-55 and higher. Amps have HPF built-in. And to get good bass tone you need to set your mids first and add bass and treble to complete the sound. That's it. And even though you use HPF you still need freq to cut through which are MIDS. So you need to eq mids anyway. You can use HPF but I really don't understand the idea that HPF is a thing that help you sound better or prevent your gear from damage. It's more complex thing than just "simple' filter box.

It's a tool that actually can do exactly those things if you care to learn how to use it for those purposes. And like any tool, if not used wisely the results may not be so swell. ;)

Let's say we have 50hz-18kHz cab (+/-3db). Most of well-known brands have freq response like that. That's how HPF and LPF looks like in most cabs. As you can see sub region (20-60hz) are still -16db (20hz) to -2db (60hz).

Now let's say we have bass knob which is set at 40hz (like in most amps I guess) and it's a Low Shelf Filter (as most amps have). If we boost 3db (which is a plenty and "about 1'o clock) we have this:

Any big difference in 20-60hz area? NO.
Let's say our amp has +18db boost for that 40hz knob and we are stupid junks and boost it up (and gain adn volume too lol). It looks like this:

Now it's too much but you must crank everything up.

Now let's say we cut 3db (just probably at 11 o'clock) (1 pic) and 18 db (all the way down) (2nd pic) with bass knob on our amp. it looks like below. So why bother with HPF that much? For me no worries and no significant difference if I just use one knob which gives me less phase issues instead use pedals, tricks, and all that bs because "that solve my problems with lack of knowledge how eq on bass amp works".

So if you have so detailed approach to eq your sound use parametric eq then. HPF have almost nothing to do because other instruments lay way above sub range and you get better results to cut somewhere in high bass or mids than hpf your bass (which has the best sound on 2nd harmonics so B=60hz and above, E=80hz and up and so on! It's where HPF cuts tone of the bass not help! Your cab and amp did that HPF thing enough for you!). HPF are great for guitars and instruments which lies way above 100hz. Bass can be tweaked with bass knob which is 9/10 LSF and it's enough.
Btw how I could and can play bass with a band without HPF and I hear myself great? Anybody can answer me that? :D Maybe it's because I have good amp, good cab, I don't crank up things and just cut and boost mids and highs when it's necessary? Naaah... It can't be lol :D

Of course not! You must cranck up bass a lot to make distortion from bass cab. You probably have bad build cab. As I said most cabs have HPF from 45 up to even 70hz so you must put at least 3-6-9db of bass those low end to make it flat. Not mention boost! You just tune cab not amp. If amp have build HPF it's not a real amp. My is flat (+/-1db) on 20-20k. No HPF. HPF is in the cab which is tuned to some freq. Most 45 and up. You don't tune cab with HPF pedal but with building and tuning (ported cabs have 18-24db/oct and sealed 12db/oct).
I love it when people come in here and try to school the experts.
 
But cabs are not flat from 1hz to 20kHz. Cabs have natural HPF because are tuned. Freq response is (often) +/-3db so below that is a slope which is 12db/oct for sealed and 18-24db/oct slope in ported cabs. So if cab have 50-15k that means 50hz is (+/-3db) and 25hz is -12db to -18/-24db depends on cab build. If you don't boost your bass knob all the way up and don't have cab which is tuned lower than 45-50 you have nothing to do with HPF. It all depends how cab is build and what you do with your eq. It's very hard to blow up cabs these days. You must boost bass A LOT and turn up the volume "at 11" to do that. And still with good cab it's hard to completely damage it. And don't forget that bass have the highest amplitude on 2nd harmonic which still is about 60hz for low B string. Any big distortions are in 20-50hz area so as you can see low B is still above that. Look at that pic below. It;s HPF at 50hz and 100hz 12db/oct shelf boosted 16 DB!!! If you need boost your 100hz bass knob that far you definitely don't know what you do with eq.

You are not understanding what an electrical HPF does or why it's important/useful then. It's used to reduce the low frequency extension to decrease the lowest fundamentals which allow for a better (or more appropriate for most players) proportion of harmonics to fundamental for the lowest notes where the speakers is not really able to reproduce the fundamental effectively anyway. By removing this information, the bass can appear to be more coherent. It also more effectively protects the speakers from the effects of over-excursion which improves reliability... a win-win compromise.

1. Too strong signal? How you can do that from bass guitar? And especially passive one? 2nd harmonic is where amplitude of the note is the highest. Way above subs (even for 5 string bass). It's almost impossible to do that :) Do you think that bass cab manufacturers don't know that?
2. Amp won't waste power for useless frequencies if you don't crank them up. Simple as that :)
3. Shroeder freq. Is way above subbass. Mainly 100-300hz so you don't use HPF that high anyway.
Sorry but to blow away your cab you have try realy hard to make it come true. Same with reduce unwanted freq which bass not produce. Not mention amp. If you don't boost you won't add gain to that frequencies. And bass lives in mids + what I write above. Of course you can use HPF - it's up to you and I'm the last person who will forbid anyone to use it, but as I said above, it's 9/10 useless anyway.

YOUR tastes are really not representative of the more experienced players as a whole, based on my experience dealing with thousands of players. Generally, the fundamental is roughly 40-50% for the lowest 1/2 octave with the remaining 60% being 2nd, and 3rd harmonics plus the harmonics above that. It's not primarily 2nd harmonics. If the power is being used to reproduce frequencies below what the cabinet is capable of (say the F6 point), it's being wasted.

That's why most bass amps have shelf filters with their bass knobs. Just tad of cut and you are in home. Same with bass synths.

Here's where it's clear that you do not understand your own argument (and this is not a language barrier because it's all in the numbers".

A HPF has a steeper slope than a typical shelving bass eq filter, the HPF is usually between 12 and 24dB per octave while the shelving bass eq filter is 6dB/octave. You are comparing a first order transfer function with a 2nd, 3rd or 4th order function, entirely different in its effectiveness of removing unwanted LF signal without interfering with what remains.

But how much you must boost your bass? 10db? 20db? You don't have ears or what? :D Which normal human being do that? LOL. Which one recommend using HPF? I never heard anyone of bass amp manufacturer to encourage users to use HPF. IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DO IT'S POINTLESS. IF NOT YOU BETTER LEARN HOW EQ WORKS. And I'm not shouting ;) Just emphasize obvious thing ;)

Actually, you don't know how eq works or you wouldn't have shouted or emphasized what you posted.

Boosting a bass signal by 6dB multiplies the power required to drive the speaker by 4 times at those low frequencies. This is why it's important to STEEPLY filter out what's unwanted before applying eq, this way if the signal is filtered out, there is no inherent danger of using EQ.

In fact, it opens up the possibility of using the HPF in addition to some bass boost from the shelving EQ to achieve some unique and useful voicings.

I think you would gain some much needed knowledge by learning more about HPF's before continuing your argument. HPF's have been used for decades, in the recording world, in the pro audio world (my home turf), and in the acoustic instrument amplification world in addition to bass amps.

Correct. Like Charlie said, they are tools and muilt-use tools at that. Different players and different situations will find different ways to use HPF's to improve their sound to their liking. HPF's are also used when building side chain distortion parallel path processing, to limit the amount of low energy buildup that can quickly become non-musical.
 
Ok. I know it. But why use another HPF then if you have one built-in your amp? If you don't add enormous db to your low end you won't have ANY problems at all. Amps and cabs are built to last not just blow out because you turn some knob a little bit up or down! You still forget that bass amp and cab is not a PA system. It's suited for bass guitar so if you don't do anything stupid you have no problems. Is that still not obvious?

You do realize they have them on the FOH mixers and sound techs use them all the time, right?

You don't need to do anything, no one's forcing you to either. FYI 16 years experience on Talkbass is considered a freshman or a sophomore, definitely not a senior.

The shelving EQ is a first order filter, in order for it to be able to achieve +12dB (voltage) at 40Hz, it would have to be 6dB at 80Hz and would be more or less flat at 160Hz, BUT in reality, most are closer to +12dB at 80Hz, +6dB at 160Hz and becoming close to flat at 320Hz. When measuring in-circuit responses, it's common to find that these circuits are still +3dB at 320hz because the circuits themselves do not behave exactly as the theory predicts.

Now, using your own diagrams, when you boost the bass knob by +12dB, you are sending 16 times the power to the speaker at 40Hz and even though you may not see any change in level, the power is still going to the speaker and ultimately doing damage. This is the danger of shelving bass eq without a HPF. With a STEEP (as in 24dB/octave) HPF, the signal falls at a faster rate then the shelving bass eq rises, which eliminates 90% of that "16 times" power sent to the speaker at 40Hz.

THIS is the reason (or at least one reason) why a HPF is so useful, especially in the age where power amps are large enough to damage speakers sop easily.

Maybe you sound good without one. Maybe you would sound better with one. Maybe you would sound different, but not better or worse. It's a tool that can be useful, but no one has to use it. It sure cleans up my sound, so I understand why a person might want one.

I just use those diagrams to show what I mean. They are definitely not the sientific truth because I don't have that knowledge. All I know is what I observe and learn in that case. Thank you for detailed explanation. It helps me to understand those things a lot. And definitely helped to understand why I should really consider HPF. It definitely make sense and speaks to me.

Maybe. I don't know the engineering details. I used to use Ampeg SVT4 PRO and now I use HandBox R400.

No, because a speaker does not really have a single number rating, though most manufacturers provide one it's generally not representative of what the speakers power handling really is versus frequency.

Generally, a speaker's mechanical power handling falls as frequency decreases. So, a speaker with a nominal power handling of 400 watts may have a real world mechanical power handling capacity of 200 watts at 40Hz, which is one major reason why speakers can fail in bass guitar applications.

It depends, some manufacturers take this into account and some do not, when publishing their power handling ratings.

The order is the steepness of the roll-off slope, this is an important specification (along with Q and cut-off frequency) that describe the behavior of the HPF.

It's a feature that has taken some time to implement, in part because of a lack of understanding (and incorrect assumptions) about why filtering (with an APPROPRIATE filter) the extreme low end can be helpful. If fact, it can give the perception of more usable low end when the extremes are removed.

It is standard on 3 of our 5 models, by design and intent. There are fixed HPF's on the D-800 and D-350, and all the Genzler amps too, as well as the Genz Benz Shuttle, Streamliner, GBE and NeoPak models. There is a variable HPF that's combined with LF gain on the ShuttleMax and GBE-750/1200, it's called the LF Boost filter and it was originally called "LF Extend" but at that time reducing the extreme LF signal was considered a flaw so it had to be disguised. My have things changed in 15-20 years.

I use a Broughton HPF, it's the first thing I hit coming out of my bass. It's followed by a SansAmp Bass Fly Rig, and into the amp, one of several, including a Bassman 300 Pro among them.
I set it from 45 to almost 60 Hz, depending... I'm still learning about it. After reading this last couple pages I'm going to try being a little bolder with my EQ...
