Correct me if I misunderstand, noise gates usually let your full signal pass when you're playing and kick in when you're not?Maybe, but I'm not sure I would like that result in general (though as an effect it could be quite useful).

So, if the hpf/lpf on the pedal in question only adjusts how the noise gate operates, your statement about the audio path refers to this?
Or, is the HPF/LPF "always on"(Audio path) waiting for the noise gate to come on when you stop playing?

Try what happens to your sound at 120 Hz (max freq. that you can "low cut")?
You should have a lot of "wire" and not much "deep end" in your sound?
So it seems it's a real, always-on HPF.no, no real information sorry...
but the sound gets noticeably thinner when turning the low cut to 120 (with the noisegate knob turned to 0)

FYI: Out of curiosity, I am conducting a survey amongst members of a sound-techs group on facebook relating to use of HPFs by bass players...will let you know the results...

Neither side trusts the other to know what they are doing.
I think it's all about shaping a signal to reach a pleasing output.I think it's really important for us to learn how to use our HPFs and LPFs properly. If we're 'hearing' the effect than we're probably not using them correctly as they aren't really 'effects.' Saying that, we are most likely to use a LPF as an effect so my previous statement is obviously not 100%.
Not neccessarily. IMHO, there are at least two scenarios under which sending pre-HPF signal to FOH does not make sense: 1. if used as speaker cabinet protection; 2. if used to overcome the acoustics of the stage which is different from the acoustics of the audience room...

Where it sounds best.where is the best place to insert HPFs and LPFs?
Did you poll them on whether they preferred a pre-EQ DI feed as well, by any chance?
One reason I bought an always on HPF was because of advise provided by @agedhorse whom knows what he's talking about. IMHO I feel it's useful at the end of the chain but more important an the beginning.Where it sounds best.
