High Pass Filter (HPF) and Low Pass Filter (LPF) Mega Thread

Maybe, but I'm not sure I would like that result in general (though as an effect it could be quite useful).
Correct me if I misunderstand, noise gates usually let your full signal pass when you're playing and kick in when you're not?

So, if the hpf/lpf on the pedal in question only adjusts how the noise gate operates, your statement about the audio path refers to this?

Or, is the HPF/LPF "always on"(Audio path) waiting for the noise gate to come on when you stop playing? This would be the "both" scenario?

It could be either way.

It's most common for the gate to open and close on the full range signal, but be controlled by a band passed signal. This allows the gate to open and close on the signal itself rather than the signal plus "out of band" noise. An easy application to visualize is the use of such a filter on a gate used for kick drum. The bandpass filter is set to somewhere around 100-200Hz for the key signal which rejects the bleed that may be picked up by the mic from the snare. This way, the snare bleed doesn't open the gate for the kick when no kick signal is present.

As an effect, using a combination HP/LP filter on the key signal, it's possible to open up the filter way more, and the key signal could be supplied from a filtered main signal which would just be a different way to do it (less selectivity) with a somewhat different effect.
 
Is the high pass and low pass on the gate's key signal and not on the audio path?

Try what happens to your sound at 120 Hz (max freq. that you can "low cut")?

You should have a lot of "wire" and not much "deep end" in your sound?

no, no real information sorry... ;)

but the sound gets noticeably thinner when turning the low cut to 120 (with the noisegate knob turned to 0)

FYI: Out of curiosity, I am conducting a survey amongst members of a sound-techs group on facebook relating to use of HPFs by bass players...will let you know the results...

Results are here: 60 per cent of sound techs preferred to be sent pre HPF signal, 1.5 per cent preferred post HPF signal, 38.5 per cent did not care. 70 sound techs participated in the survey...

This kinda goes into the whole performer vs. sound tech debate.
Neither side trusts the other to know what they are doing.

I think it's really important for us to learn how to use our HPFs and LPFs properly. If we're 'hearing' the effect than we're probably not using them correctly as they aren't really 'effects.' Saying that, we are most likely to use a LPF as an effect so my previous statement is obviously not 100%.

Not neccessarily. IMHO, there are at least two scenarios under which sending pre-HPF signal to FOH does not make sense: 1. if used as speaker cabinet protection; 2. if used to overcome the acoustics of the stage which is different from the acoustics of the audience room...

I think it's all about shaping a signal to reach a pleasing output.
As a utility or as an effect they are both commonly used subjectively, but "justified" objectively.

If you're using a DI box before your amp, as opposed to a DI out on your amp, you can use to compensate for stage acoustics and still send it to the PA board without the filter. This would mean, if you're using any other outboard effects, that they would be placed prior to the DI box. Maybe a good question is, where is the best place to insert HPFs and LPFs?

I plug my bass directly into an always on HPF before my tone altering pedals and have a combo HPF/LPF at the end. I try to set them minimally and roll 'em back when they become audible.

Did you poll them on whether they preferred a pre-EQ DI feed as well, by any chance?

One reason I bought an always on HPF was because of advise provided by @agedhorse whom knows what he's talking about. IMHO I feel it's useful at the end of the chain but more important an the beginning.

Side note: I've spent 30 years without any filters (other than on amps), effects or pedals without an issue. I've only begun to include them to help fine-tune my tone.

btw. My math teacher at university told us:

When I first got into my old fisheries research gig it was a real eye opener working with real statistical analysts and a peer reviewed format. There was a prevailing trend towards writing "bears further investigation" when things didn't go your way. My bosses were brutally honest though, and one year I made a nice bonus by painstakingly debunking a certain widely held and published assumption. As in so many things, it was all about asking the right questions.
