High Pass Filter (HPF) and Low Pass Filter (LPF) Mega Thread

How's that working out?
People are talking about them but no one has said if they're doing the job. Seems like a great solution for those on a budget.

it´s doing the job. i´m definetly better audible in our rehersal room, without being louder.

Several online reviews claim that the Hotone gate does not in fact LPF and HPF, but that those knobs define which frequencies are ignored by the gate and don't change the frequency content of the output signal.

i thought the description in the manual suggesting exactly this, but as said above it definetly has an audible effect apart from noisegating...

can´t say if the hicut has an effect, but i think not

In stock again! Just ordered mine.
Mine arrived this week and I found time yesterday to build it. I used it this morning in the reherseal room with my band, but I think I have to reset all the eq's and other settings to really apreciatte a big step. At the moment, the lowest note I play (A# aprox. 29Hz?) seemed to be more focused, that it's one of the original purposes.

That spec info is the Vong kit. Is that a clone of the Hotone?
Not in particular, because the Hotone it's a noise gate with HPF/LPF included. The overall Vong pedal it's unique I think, don't know from where the designs of every feature came from (HPF,LPF,Booster,Phase inverter,DI). But the designer (Julian Pöhler) has deep knowledge on the electronics as I see, so I think it's an original design from him as the Pumpernikel (compressor) is. Not the same as Guma Drive and Guma Antique that are B3K and Vintage Microtubes clones. I already built a Guma Drive from him too:

Hi basstscho :) (grüass di!)

I think we all would like to know, if the Hotone is a real HPF/ LPF!!!! :hyper:

Maybe post the manual? (koi Stress! After one beer or two!)

greetings

Wise

i wish i could like your post more than once. you put a big grin in my face, thanks for that :)
you wrote "koi stress" exactly like lots of people in my area pronounce it.

as for the hotone, here is a link to the manual.
Invalid Link Removed

this is whats confusing to me:
"Use the CUT button to enable a harder noise reduction mode."

i have never tried another hpf/lpf, so no comparison and clue ;)
all i can say is the low cut really "tightens" my sound.
as i wrote above, i´m definetly better audible in our rehearsal room.

i don´t think it would have this effect if the cut-function would just deal with "noise".
so i would guess it´s a "real" hpf/lpf

from the hotones product page:

Noise Reduction

GATE is a true-bypass designed noise reduction stompbox for guitarists/bassists. No matter what kind of style you are playing, this tiny pedal will effectively keep noise and hum away from your pedalboard without changing your own tone.
The CUT button enables a more harder noise reduction mode, which provides a low cut filter (from 40Hz to 120Hz) and a high cut filter (from 5kHz to 15kHz) adjustable by the two small knobs onboard.
It’s time to get rid of the annoying hum and noise----Keep your pedalboard pure!

Is the high pass and low pass on the gate's key signal and not on the audio path?

Those 2 pieces of information are printed on the pedal itself.

The AMOUNT of cut on the LPF and HPF is what people actually want to know.

Hi basst scho :)

"Use the CUT button to enable a harder noise reduction mode."

Sounds very :wacky: to me too!

No real information! Nothing about the slope. :(

Try what happens to your sound at 120 Hz (max freq. that you can "low cut")?

You should have a lot of "wire" and not much "deep end" in your sound?

Wise(b)ass

btw: thx for the compliment :D

exactly like lots of people in my area pronounce it.

On my planet they will say: Koin schdress nit! ;) :roflmao:

This is a good question but I do have to ask,
What good would a noise gate be if you are high passing just the trigger mechanism seems like its be too easy for it to ignore line noise?
Same with the LPF how helpful is it if the "bees in a trashcan" noise is ignored?

Maybe I'm lacking imagination here.

You are not lacking imagination, but adjusting the HP and LP filters on the gate can change how the gate feels, how it transitions, and its perceived sensitivity to signal.

If you high pass and low pass the signal, the gate can become more sensitive to opening on the signal you want to hear and less sensitive on the signal that you wish to gate out with no signal present.

It's a common paramater that's used when designing a gate, or in some gate applications, which is why some pro gates include these filters (or a bandpass filter) on the control or key signal. This is why I asked the question.
