High Pass Filter (HPF) and Low Pass Filter (LPF) Mega Thread

I'm still waiting for an active HPF to put on board my basses. Pretty sure it will be a long wait.

The classic MusicMan 3-band preamps have one built in, so not necessarily.

I hear there may also be an open source one in the works right? ;)

True story, but first I have to build something that actually works, and then fail to sell it. I seem to be better at the second part than the first!

I have an fdeck HPF-Pre and a built in HPF in my Shuttle head, so my HPF needs are pretty well covered. Now I covet an LPF to conceal my poor technique and string noise. But when I look at the Broughton site, well the LPF is nearly as expensive as the LPF + HPF, and then I might as well step up to the one with the sweepable mid filter, and pretty soon I’m considering going all out on the Messenger preamp with all the goodies. Decisions, decisions.

Get in-ear monitors. You'll clean it up yourself. Ask me how I know. :D

I would like to know too. I have MM Sterling made in nineties with 3-band EQ...

Not sure I even have the Spice model I made anymore, but I'll check. I'm more reluctant to post stuff like that these days due to now being under the CUP agreement here, in all honesty. @RobbieK has posted an analysis somewhere in the P&E forum here at least once or twice as well in any case.

This what you’re talking about?

Yep, that thread's what put me onto modeling that preamp. I was messing with the Uncle Fluffy 2-band clone at that time and just trying to get a little smarter about onboard preamps by studying various classic designs.

This one is a low pass filter, even has a video where he's using it with a keyboard.
Passive Filter - Handmade | Handmade Electronic Instruments

Here's a HPF, and the guy says in the description to let him know if its for bass, because he uses different components.
Gob Instruments Small Fi Bass Cut Lo Fidelity effect pedal Passive EQ High Pass Filter Low

Those are probably simple first order HPF's (6dB/oct). In the past I made a passive HPF for bass. It works but not as good as a second order (12db/oct) active one. More info on my passive HPF in this thread: Dropping the bass - love at 50Hz

For bass, the most common "effect" I see in a loop is a compressor. Many of the older, most popular compressors were rack mount units that were line level only and the loop is provided to allow line level effects to be used after the preamp increases the level from instrument to line level.

Most (but not all) pedals are instrument level and generally work better between the bass and the input.

If you plan on using line level effects, you will need an effects loop.

The (Mesa) D-800 does have a HPF, it's fixed at about 32Hz (iirc). The D-800+'s HPF is variable.

Subscribed! I am looking for a small-black-passive HPF / LPF with marked frequencies in Hz, if it is possible. I don’t mind if it is one single stomp or two different ones.

The most similar I know are the Broughton ones (no passives)...

Can anyone recommend me one?

Best!

IEMS made me get a LPF for my setup. It was passing more highs than my amp setup and I didn't find it all that pleasurable. That was further exacerbated by the Darkglass Tone Capsule preamp...the highest band on that unit is a high mid at 2.8K and the preamp doesn't touch anything in the true upper treble range. So now I can roll back my tone to match what I'm actually comfortable hearing through my cabs and also give my DI a tone closer to my ideal tone.
