Highschool without drugs?

That's one of the best statements made in that topic here.

It's quite interesting what you learn here about American highschool, being a Kraut who's aged 17, attending 12th grade of a German grammar school which means that I'm less than two years away from passing my Abitur (= diploma you get after passing your final exams on a German secondary school which is qualifying you for university admission or matriculation). :D

Coming back to the original topic here, I'd say it is very possible. If you do not want to take drugs, then just don't do it. If you're in some group of so-called friends who are putting the bite on you, I'd rather dissociate myself from them if I were you. All in all, I would not want to hang around with that kind of fellow-students. "Friends" is actually not the right term for people of that ilk, ecause, to be honest, what kind of friend is someone putting pressure on you to take drugs? They surely want to be tolerated consuming them, then they should tolerate the fact that there might be people being better off without drugs. Whoever feels free to try it shall go ahead, but who isn't interested in that kind of experience should not be forced into doing that.
It's pretty much the same with alcohol. Some like to have a beer once in a while, some not, some get drunk, some only drink water and Coca Cola, but who cares? I've never been talked into drinking something I wasn't willing to (liquor for instance, I really enjoy drinking beer or Hessian cider). Denying politely but firmly should be enough.
However, since we're on a board for musicians...er, well, bassplayers, sorry, just one thing: When you're into taking drugs, drinking booze, no matter else, please save it for after your band practice or gig. I had to see a band playing covers of rock from the seventies on some village's annual celebration that had to many beers in between the second and the third set. Never have I seen such an embarassing gig and heard such a tremendous noise... :eyebrow:

um yeah, me. my friends were the drug/drinking crowd. i was always the designated driver.

reasons for not indulging: parents are/were alcoholics and guess which of the 4 kids got the gene?
my dad's entire drug speech to me:"you do drugs, i'll kill ya."
didnt particularly want to test him.

if you dont think you can abstain and really want to, get new friends.

I tried a few things during high school. Occasional drink, little pot here and there and some other all-natural highs that you can find in a garden. Also abused some pharms, which was freaking stupid on my end.

My first year of college was either drinking or tripping every weekend, some weekdays. I wasn't much of a student then :/

You can certainly get through high school without drugs, and it probably won't be that hard if you have a strong will.

However, if you do make the decision to use a drug, please for the love of god be safe about it. Do some research, get an idea for what it will do, possible side effects, how to treat someone in the case of an OD or bad trip, and make sure you're in a safe environment, with a sober person or two to keep an eye on you. If possible, ALWAYS test drugs for purity too. Never go to a dealer if you can't get 5 good references, or just never ever go to a dealer. That's how you get busted.

It's possible to use drugs safely and responsibly, but its all up to you. You can DEFINITELY go through school with no drugs though. I'm not here trying to glamorize them or anything, just to encourage the safe and responsible taking of drugs.

Not me, I started smoking pot when i was 16. But dont let anyone else convince you that you can't do it man. If youre strong in your beliefs no one can phase you. Just becasue everyone else is doing drugs doesnt mean you have to as well.

As one of my cousins put it, "Nobodies gonna push their **** on you if they're smart, cuz why would they waste their stuff?" Keep in mind though I do smoke herb, but I refer to myself as a casual user. Certain things aren't harmful, if you use them moderately, that's the problem with American youth though, no one moderates. I think as long as you don't have an addictive personality and stay away from certain things you should be fine.


But whatever floats your boat is the right thing for you, don't ever let anyone else tell you otherwise.

I would not argue with legality. Laws in Europe are less restrictive. German laws allow me to have beer and wine since I've turned 16. In a month I'll turn 18, then I may have even liquor. But I don't think I'll make heavy use of that since I don't want to drink something that burns down my throat. ;) In France, laws are even slacker. Whereas in some other countries (in the middle east for example) it is totally prohibited to consume alcohol of any kind while it may be allowed to smoke substances which are illegal in western countries.
Terms like legal and illegal aren't a measure in cases like talking about drugs. If doing this or that is legal it just means it's accepted by society. So it depends on the time and place you're living in. So I would not try to put drugs in typical human categories of thinking like 'good' and 'bad' since this is as well a matter of which values you are surrounded and influenced by.

When it comes to drugs I'd say it's a question of personality. Who's really willing to take them will take them sooner or later, there's always a way of getting it somehow. And, coming back to the original question: Who's really not willing to try drugs will be able to stay away from it.

Mmm, over here it's legal to consume alcohol in your own home from the age of 5, I believe. I always get confused by american films where high school parties get broken up by the police because people are drinking and everyone gets sent home. I mean whats up with that? Does it really happen?

Listen dude. You don't have to profess to be a straight edge to not want to do drugs or drink alcohol. If you don't want to, don't. It's that simple. You make it sound like there are roving gangs of kids pinning your down and making you smoke crack. It's just not that way.

Straight Edge is stupid. Just be yourself. Keep things in perspective and you'll find friends that have similar opinions as you. Focus on school. Join a sports team, or if that's not your bag, start a band.

Back in the day, when I was in school, LSD was the biggest, baddest thing around. Barely anyone did anything more than smoke pot and steal their parents' liquor on the weekends. 9 out of 10 of us turned out ok, but a few of my friends turned into junkies, 3 of them have died from drug abuse.

In the last decade, coke, meth and X have made their way into the school system, it's way easier to **** your life up now than it was just 10 years ago.

Truuuue and I see what you're saying, with the highly addictive harder substances it's very easy to ruin your life.

I'm in college right now. I was never once asked to do drugs 0although a lot of people assumed I did). People don't really care if you don't drink either. It's not like they will disown you, and if they did, they wouldn't really be people you wanted to hang out with anyway.

Ah, I'm 43 and never done anything - well alcohol in college.
You need to surround yourself with the right people.
I teach HS and I know for a fact it can be and is done all the time.
