HIGHSCHOOL WOODSHOP BUILD #2

Well some of you may remember me, if you do thanks for readin my thread. My last bass is finished but i am waiting on strings i am talkin with the guy who builds Knuckle Quake basses (his strings are for his 39 inch scale basses) and i will remind you that mine is a 38. why am i saying this about a previous build? well i couldnt find my other old thread so im givin an update on this one.

Anywho... i have been accumulating materials and i have made my drawing (i will have pictures soon i just need to do a tad bit of work on it) for my junior woodshop class build. So ill just cut to the chase and give you the specs.......


6 string hollow body
fretless or fretted i havent quite decided
padouk fretboard
american walnut body
wenge top
black limba neck
36 inch scale
Linum viate bridge and nut... bone nut mabye?


I have the body wood and the top wood and the fretboard wood but i still need some black limba. i will have photos soon.


NOW!! i have some questions:)

Wood or bone nut? opinions
how thick whould the top be?
and i have never played a 6 string with a flat board(no radius on FB) is it practical or should i put the extra work in and radius it..?
Also how do you luthiers make a neck through bass and put a top over the neck on the front of the body? do you just cut the top to compensate for the finger board?

..... and i can garuntee there will be more.


I want to thank you ALL for the help on my last build i couldnt of done it without the support of the Talkbass comunnity.

school started already? i still got a little less than 2 weeks. buid number 2 is the ONLY thing i am looking forward 2. been planning all summer, and will be pissed if they tell me no on the bass build. lol can't wait to see it. i think you are one of the more original builders here

yea school starts after labor day for me and as for getting a teachers support for you building a bass well i have some tips... Make a nice clean technical drawing, bring in your last build in, and show that you can buy the materials, and seem like you know what your talkin about. Last year my teacher was sceptical but as soon as i showed him some to the peices i had made and some work that i did i got his support. I wouldent worry about it i saw your build you did a great job you shouldnt have a problem gaining your teachers support. Who needs any more cutting boards anyways?

Yes there is not a bridge design yet because i still need some advice on weather to usean adjustible bridge or if it would be ok if i used a wooden one... opinions??


this is going to be a much more diffucult build. im kinda nervous. but the result of this if i do it right will be a B E A utiful bass.



I would love to here what you all have to say about this one.

looks like we are going path for school build 2. is it a neck through? mind sharing your method of hollowing it? that is the main thing thats making it hard to sleep. good luck. love the originalility and design. so whats going on with the upper "horn"? is that parts to be hollowed? I noticed that the scale is no longer insane, but still a strech for most. cool. good luck dude, keep us updated

yea thats the only part of the bass that im not quite sure what what to do with... cause i need some holes to let the sound out but not sure what to do. im sure ill figure something out.

While the bat wing thing is a bit odd, I think I dig it. To my eye, the treble side horn needs to be rotated forward a bit to give the design a little more visual balance. I would also spend a little more time on the ff holes, do some research on old instruments paying special attention to the way they taper outwards twards the "nick". Also look at viols for interesting alternatives to ffs and maybe a better solution to the "bat wing sound hole". If you're planing on making it fretless, a fixed wooden bridge should work fine, but a fretted needs bridge adjustment.

yea the electrinics are done and the bridge is made but i just need strings i am talking to the quake basses guy cause he makes super longscale strings and thats what i need. Other than a few bridge and nut adjustments and some polishing its basically done
