1 very interesting design, some cool parts
2 how about replacing the batwing with something like a mirror image of the headstock top
3 how about an f hole design that picks up the same theme of a circle with some sort of attached trailing curve; maybe something like a comma; something that either follows or complements the form of the outer edge of the bass in its immediate vicinity, rather than fighting the otherwise curvaceous form by having a dead-linear "backbone"
4 that Ibanez EDA-like treble horn looks cool, but also seems like it might be painful while playing in seated position

Like some guys already pointed out seems that upper horn doest look good. I would work a bit with the headstock too (too pointy on 3 corners and a roll in the other). I think the fholes would look nice but don't like those f's.

Well they prolly dont look right cause i have to do all the drawing by hand and still keep everything to proportion. Its not easy to do with a pencil and a few T squares and a calculator. I am working on the f holes but i can only do so much cause i still cannot phathom how im going to cut the template or route the holes themselves so i have to keep them to a certain width because of my router bit limitations and certain simplicity because i only have so much time next year. I still dont have the bit for it. Im not sure what im gonna do about the headstock but i kinda like it the way it is. And i am currently remosling the upper "bat wing" bout.

Thanks alot. i hope to be a bass builder for a living but i have to get alot more than a handful of basses built before i feel comfertable selling them to anyone.

2. Hmmm its tough for me to get a mental image of that but i think i might get what your saying

4. yea my last bass was the same kind of design but i made it to the form of my leg so it was pretty comfterble.

i am doing my f-holes sort of like number 3. also, instead of binding on the sides, i plan to sand the f-holes, so they angle inward to show the accent. again good luck! i get to start mine monday

IOW, your f-holes look like a straight line, with a curl on each end and the thing in the middle. On a violin, the main stroke of the line is not a straight line; the main stroke and its two end curls make one continuous S shape, with no straight portion. Kind of like the difference between cursive writing and block lettering.

Yup, that's it. On his design, I feel the straight f's are fighting the body shape.

not quite sure yet since if i go above 35 er 36 then ill have to buy special strings again. I dont know yet....

are you gonna laminate the top? not sure what you mean... thanks good luck to you also. I hope ur puttin up a thread. I started but only on bits and peices.

just had my first day, and am eager to get a good start as well. can't do it till wendsday though. yeah, i will take a camera, and make a thread out of it.
what i ment with my f-holes, is to take the top, cut the f-holes, glue the acent to that, cut the hole again, but smaller (then i am doing a 2nd accent, repeating the steps), after that, i will sand them untill they blend flush, angling inward. you can do this with the top, without accents, just glue enough scap on the inside for it to look the same. my top is flamed maple, then bloodwood accent, then purpleheart accent, then core.

i remember that 38 you built that thing was sick i have monkey arms myself but i could never imagine playing above a 36

I'm actually digging the batwing upper horn. If it were my project, I'd actually change the lower horn to make it a bit more in the vein of the batwing style. You can also continue that theme into the f-holes. Make 'em a bit more gothic looking (angular, batwing, spider-webby), yet still functional. It would certainly create a very unique bass. You've obviously got that style in you, I assume, since you designed it... let it flow through the whole piece.

Anywho i have a question how thick should i make my top? how thick do simi hollow basses usually run?

And as for the design and the f holes its turning out well i like it alow better. and the dubbed "bat wing" is gone.

HEllo everyone i know its been a while since i posted. but i havent been able to use our school shop all this time. but a week ago a big shipment came in with all of our machines alot of nice powermatic stuff. so i have some work done i have my body wing sandwiches glued (walnut,padouk,walnut). and i have my neckk stringers cut. i am actually in woodshop class at the moment and today i plan to bookmatch my top. i plan to have pictures up soon.
