Highschool woodshop build

This is easily going to be the most watched thread EVAR. We're all biting our nails hoping this turns out awesome!
Have you fattened up your lower horn? Even if you added 1/4" to each side, it'll have a drastic effect without an obnoxious visual change.
As for longer graphite rods, none of my industrial material sources show lengths greater than 24". So I think you're stuck, unless you can call StewMac and ask whether they get their material pre-cut or can offer you a custom order for a bit more money.

i havent thickened up the bottom horn yet but i havent cut the body yet so i still got time. today i plan to glue the neck. yea i hope this turns out cause i plan on using it alot. the main reason i wanted to do this project is cause i want too many basses that i cant afford so i have to make my own.
I think steel could be a bad idea, since your bass is significantly longer than the average, due to the unusual, yet interesting, scale lentgh. If you do use steel, chances are you'll get neck dive, even with carbon fiber. 38" is huge, I really hope you are going to use ultralites, or I hope you can't stand playing sitting down.
On a less pessimistic note, this is a very interesting design, and I really like what you got done so far. Lookin good, especially for a dude your age. (I assume you're somewhere around 16yo) Ill definitely be lookin forward to some progress! Peace

thanks everybody for your comments but to answer why i want a 38 inch scale well first off im not your average 15 year old
im about 6'1" i weigh 215 and have considerably large hands compared to my bass player friends also i hate hate hate big guage strings and i hate even more loose big guage strings so to increase tention and response i always have wanted a longer scale hence a 38" scale. and alot of the reasons this bass is so unusual is cause thats how i am. it fits my personality and also my dislike of factory basses and the shape they are there all to much the same to me. so i crave someting different

Yeah I know what you mean, at 16 I'm 6'3 and 235, but even with large hands I can't imagine a 38" man. My Dingwall's B string has a 37" and it's a fairly long stretch. Might wanna think about that. But as long as it's your instrument, it's up to you completely. But the body shape looks sick, I'd probably buy one.
If you're really dedicated beyond building a bass, save yourself some money and buy yourself something you can really enjoy for many years to come, it makes me even more dedicated to my music that way and it inspires me to play/practice more often.

Not for nothing, but an upright is commonly a 41" fretless. While it's certainly uncommon for an electric strap-on bass, and a lot of people might not be comfortable playing it, it's not like the world turned upside down or anything.

I believe that a lot of the Carl Thompson basses are ~38" scale... at least, the more recent ones.
yea thats where i got the idea hes got some great stuff he is one of the people that made me want to build a bass, along with a whole bunch of people on this site
