Ok, Question for the luthiers. How do i go about gluing on the fretboard? do i cover the trussrod in something or just spread glue around it and try to avoid getting any on the trussrod?

Put a strip of masking tape over the truss rod. Make it about 3-4mm wider than the truss rod channel on each side. Apply your glue to the neck and then peel off the tape. The extra 3-4mm without glue will get glue on it when you tighten the clamps and the glue spreads.

That's how I used to do it. But of course there is still a little risk that the glue will spread too far and get on the rod. What I do now is use clear tape (the kind for taping paper) and just leave it on.

I have even left a narrow piece of the blue painter's tape under fretboards before with no ill effects. The paper compresses a LOT, and protects against the glue getting into the truss rod channel.

The clear 3M cellophane tape would definitely be thinner, though...

ha thanks, im almost done with the template for the body. I decided to use a router to cut the body shape cause i dont wanna fuss with a bandsaw and have i come out all crappy. but i ran into a problem, the lower side of the body was glued about a half inch out of place so i have to slightly alter the shape of the lower horn for it to work. after i finish that up it will be cutting time, im exicted. I have about another month an a half to finish it up so progress will start speeding up soon. Im entering it into the MITES competition through my school it should be interesting cause i dont know what catagory i would even enter it in.

but thanks to everyone for the help. without TB i would be screwed.

Hi everyone Guess what? i cut out the body last night sorry i dont have any pics yet (the digital camera is gone to spring break with my sis) but it came out altight it was some intense routering tho. ony one problem a peice on the bottom of the bass chipped off while routering but i expected it because the area was checking. Ill glue on a replacement peice when i get the chance. pictures will be coming sometime this week

Thanks, Im not to worried about the chipped off part. but the fretboard on the other one is ipe ill tell ya thats some nasty stuff to router, i had to get rid of about 3 inches of fretboard to make room for the pickups and even with a dust mask my nose was burning for about an hour after. but it takes a nice pilish and makes a great smooth playing surface.

It's also great for building decks (patio, not skateboard). Really hard on tools too. Should stand up nicely to roundwounds though.

With you holding it like that, it looks less like a bass and more like a .50 CAL SNIPER RIFLE!!! MAAAAAaaaaaassive.

I wish you patience patience patience. I wish you steady hands, dust-free eyes, no needs for band-aids, and lots of extra time after school.

May your tool edges never go dull. *raises beer*
