Hiwatt LA412 and bass

Hi!

Long time stalker, first time poster!

The reason for posting is that I just traded for a Hiwatt LA412, but I'm having some problems identifying it, plus I need some tips on how to make the most out of it.

  1. How can I date it? Tried looking around the web, sent some e-mails to the Hiwatt sales people, asked some vintage nuts; no luck. Need to find out if the seller actually was telling the truth regarding the year it's from. I want to avoid taking it completely apart, i.e. disconnecting the speakers from the frame. :)
  2. I've tried it out by myself, and it sounds really good, but haven't used it in a band context or a recording session yet. The speakers are (hopefully) somewhere around 75w-100w each, but is it even recommended using this cab with a bass amp and bass?
I've included some photos since it's hard to find anything about this particular model on the web:

Sorry, but that's not a Hiwatt cab, Hiwatt never made a slanted front cab, only square faced cabs.
Errr, ummm...

Post 1985 - could be into the 1990s, but dating is tough on these. Speakers should be "Legend" series rated at 75w each. Not bass speakers specifically, but that doesn't mean you can't use them. I've never been able to definitively verify who made them for Hiwatt, but there are rumors that they were made by Celestion. Contacts at Celestion offered nothing more than a shrug of the shoulders, saying basically that they may have built some speakers for Hiwatt. The speaker code numbers lead nowhere. Later units could have "real" Celestions. Hiwatt ID'ing from this era can be somewhat ambiguous due to several different ownerships and associated legal wrangling.

Thanks for the info! So the speakers are definitely from the mid 80's to the early 90's - and absolutely no Fane speakers. Well, that's a bummer.

I've actually never seen one of those with the slanted top - are they kind of rare, or did they just flop? :)
