ok i've tried some more string on my Club bass. I play neck pickup only, bass and treble off, Solo On, i have the neck pickup pot cranked. I realized i don't like Rounds on it, i like Flats.
Roto Tapes - these sound nice, a lot, i mean a LOT of bass on tap, light in the midrange. i found they highlighted intonation issues for some reason (which i didn't have with other strings, just wierd overtones that sounded out of tune but it wasn't).
Pyramid Gold Flats - Nice bottom with very little sustain, thick beefy midrange. these have seen the most time on my bass. i would like a little more top end, they are a little dark.
Gabriel Tenorio Roundcore Roundwound Puro Nickel - Very light tension/high bendability due to roundcore, nice bass and midrange, decent grind on top.
Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats - Nice sounding string, did a session and the producer and engineer remarked how much they liked it in a pop/rock setting. Lower tension and way more bendy than the Pyramids, my pickups don't go into the body, they sit on top, so i can't lower their height, and occaisionally on a hard hit the strings hit my pickups. Nice sound but i can't get with the ultra flex of them. i need hex core.
I have some Optima Flatwounds on order, they are Medium Scale (ordered directly off their website), Nickel Flatwound with Hex Core and handmade in Germany (just like Pyramids, or TI in Austria). Most people have said they sound in between the Pyramid and TI, which excites me. Also there's not many strings that fit the Hofner, most companies are just Long Scale, or short scale (too short scale). I'll report back on the Optimas.
