Hofner-(not just Beatle Basses)-Group Part 2

Only one Hofner, a HCT, bought new when they first came out.

Did you know….. that your Hofner will fit in the guitar version of the Gruv Gear Kapsule. That said I am concerned it sits a bit high in the case the top might put pressure on the bridge (but that’s more dependant on what I put in the pocket above)

Just browsing through some of the pictures of original ('60s), modern German, Contemporary and Ignitions, I noticed for the first time that there are 'inconsistencies' with the orientation of the bridge pickups. The neck pickups all seem to be oriented with the screw poles next to the fingerboard and the 'staple' poles towards the bridge. But the bridge pickups appear equally in both orientations - some with screw poles closest to the bridge and others have the staple poles closest to the bridge. So my question to those in the know - is there any logical reason or does it really not matter beyond aesthetic preference?

Yes it is - good spot :-) I hadn't noticed that as I was fixated on the bridge pickups and so many others had their neck pickups the same way. Unfortunately they are not my basses - only the Ignition in the bottom image is mine. I suppose the question still stands. Some are mirror image and some are not - beyond aesthetics, does it matter?

These 2 are my basses and this is how they came to me I've noticed a few, 60's 500/1's with their pickups in the same position as mine.
My guess is that Hofner at that time were rushing to get these basses made and shipped out, so some slipped through and were boxed up and sent out to where ever they were going.

When buying strings for the 500/1s get medium scale and not short scale. The short scale are too short. Plus the E should be 100 at most.

Glad I read your message when I did. I had bought a set of short scale chromes, but returned them for a medium set. That said, I also just ordered two sets of Pyramid Gold, so these will probably only be on temporarily...unless I totally fall in love with that tone :~P

When buying a Pyramid set, their short-scale strings will perfectly fit a 500/1 and 500/2
