I've been considering doing the same thing with a MIM P-bass body I've already made a mess of by installing a bridge PUP. I have a great old 62 Fender Jazz Reissue neck (back when they sold them the first time, around 2000) on the body, and a Seymour Duncan Antiquity pup, so it sounds like it should, but uncomfortable to play for long due to weight.....

I love the Simpsons, but seeing this clip without any context (I haven't seen this episode) was like some strange fever dream.

I have no problem with this bass. If it plays nice and sounds good I would buy it.
Oh yikes, so it is... I've seen something similar, only drilled from behind, leaving a smooth flat face for a good appearance.
I’d assume it’s super neck heavy, but at that weight maybe not. Still, I’d be petrified that if I dropped it or knocked it over the body might crack right through at one of the narrower spots.

They're drilled as well as inked. You can see the divots more clearly in this photo:
I have no problem with whatever anyone does to their own instrument to make it more suitable for them 'cause that's what I've done for decades whenever I felt the need.
If the holey J were mine and I felt the need I would have removed more body wood leaving only the rim and some in the center to support top and back plates of a nice 1/16" thick wood, installed very light tuners and moved the strap buttons to improve balance, if necessary.
