Wow, beautiful work.Check out this Tune-O Matic style bridge I made from ebony for a 10 string project I'm working on. It intonates perfectly and I have not had a problem with it.
The complete build thread is here. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] I'll be updating this pretty soon. I decided to scrap the "tailpiece" I had made and am doing another one out ebony as well as soon as I get a piece big enough. Loving this build. Been subbed since the begining.
Good point. The ability to hold is going to be dependent on the material, the design (shape-wise, and possibly grain orientation-wise), and the sizing of the design. As two extremes, consider: first, a piece of ebony veneer with a tiny hole put into it and a string threaded through, which would never take the 40-50 pounds of string tension; and a one inch block, which certainly would. Many workable designs should lie between those points.
Well, 4 years for a freebie is pretty good.
I hold my breath every time I use my cheapie Harbour Freight table saw. Talk about underpowered! I have to go real slow, but not too slow, or I burn the wood. The trials of lutherie on a budget.

So I did get the ebony cut enough to get myself a neck blank and a fingerboard.
It's got a little more brown streaking in it than I care for, but it's what I got. Perhaps some Fiebings dye.
As a side note, I wish some of these wood vendors wouldn't put a coat of shellac on their ebony. It covers up what it really is

Go check the before and after pics of my Bridge. All I used was two coats of tung oil and it turned it a nearly uniform black. When I reworked the neck on my sixer and shaved it down, it removed all of the clear lacquer, so I did the back of the neck with tung oil as well. It gave it a silky smooth satiny feel. I like it so much I probably won't use lacquer anymore on basses I'm not painting.
Wow, it's been almost a month. Where the heck does the time go.
Finally got around to doing something here, like cutting the neck out.

OK,
Allow me to recap my past month:
1) Multiple face to face interviews. BTW, just got contract with a motorcycle manufacturer in Milwaukee, and I start next week.
2) Gearing up with a new "originals" band, which successfully debuted last weekend.
3) My area had rain and flooding of historic proportions. One of the main rivers went almost 3 ft above it's old flood record. Provided general help for people that got flooded out.
4) I'm doing a landscaping project for my neighbor. It involves 3 tons of limestone for retaining walls, about 50 yards top soil, 10 yards of mulch, and 5 yards of gravel, all of which I'll moving without the aid of a skid steer. I've already lost 15lb, and I feel great!
So, progress on all of my builds has come to screeching halt
Normally I take the summer off from building because I just love to be outside. My building season this spring just went a little long this year.
Never fear, this bass, as well as others will get completed. When they get completed is a completely different question.
Heh, I'm on year three on my Ric build, totally got you beat in the slacker category! Bass looks incredibly good.
I've always been a little high strung. That helps.

Things that I have been doing for a while that help:
1) Maintain my religion
2) Eat well
3) Exercise
4) Play music
5) Tyth to myself
This last one is a lot more important than it seems. Essentially, you want to take say 10% of your income, and invest it back into yourself. Anything that develops you as an individual. Classes, reading a book, a membership at the local gym. There are many other things.
How's this for a start?
