I like the white cap, I think it's more balanced. As a bonus, the ebony now forms an "H" for holly!

Short story, I messed up the neck and the head stock didn't get glued on quite right.
Rather than try to fix it, I'll just build a new neck. Time to move on. I didn't like the way it was turning out anyway.

Didn't get much done on this, but I did get a care package from Best Bass Gear.
As I indicated earlier, I've decided to carve the bass bridge out of Ebony. I'll be using Hipshot KickAss saddles.
Because I really don't know how well the ebony will work as a base, I'll be making this a string thru to relive much of the pressure that would be there if I were to screw it down
I really need to find a piece of pure black ebony, or I'll try dying this piece to get it to the color I want.

I haven't used ebony, and of course it depends on your particular design, but I was able to use padauk for direct-pull string anchors on my first bass. I did two test pieces, one with the grain inline and one crossgrain (I think?), and IIRC both survived the point when I overtightened the string until the string broke. (Details are in the build thread.) So i used the design, and added a thin brass shim washer CA'd against the relevant surface to spread the pressure as an added measure of safety. I've had no problems with it, for several years now.
So if you'd like to go with your original design, I'd recommend doing a test piece. If the design is similar to a standard Badass/Hipshot/ABM style, you can even do it starting with the string-anchoring rear wall of the test piece thicker than your actual design, then tighten up a string on it. Assuming it is no problem, you can shave 1/32" off of that wall, and try again repeatedly until you reach the point of failure. You may be surprised with the result.
(I hate to see the back of a bass lacerated by string-thru holes unnecessarily.

Good bit of info. Thanks! I'm somewhat reluctant to punch holes through the back as well.
As far as the design of the bridge is concerned, I'm in the process of drawing up the Hipshot rick bridge that I have. I'll probably just shrink it a tad, and incorporate the channel for the bridge saddle, and go with that.
As far as fabbing it up, my greatest concern is going to get the drilled holes for the string and saddle adjust screw in straight.
Looks like rain for the weekend, so I may get this done.

Got a drawing of the new bridge. Just a tad smaller than the bridge I was going to use, which is under the paper doll
There's a little room to shrink it a bit more, so we'll see how it looks when I fab it up.
@pilotjones - How many screws did you use to secure the bridge? I'm thinking I'll use 4.

Are the saddle pieces ebony as well?
No, the saddles are from two black Tune-O-Matic bridges I got off ebay. They were the only thing I could find that was small enough to pair up for the primaries and octaves. The whole process is in the build thread I posted the link for.
Traditionally, archtop guitar tailpieces and upright bass tailpieces are ebony and seem to hold up to that string tension. Definitely test it first but I'd bet your bridge will be ok.
