Inquiring minds have a need to know.

I took the neck off my prototype to see what it would look like with the MOP triangle. As much as I like the MOP, the straight black is much better. <<Inquiring mind mode off>>
Also, for the bridge, I have some ideas for hogging out a chunk of ebony. I'm just a little unhappy with the streaking of brown in the piece I have. I might get a darker piece if I can find one.

I'm also thinking of making adjustable the saddle pieces out of unbleached bone. I've experimented with this in the past, and it can be done.

I think if I were fretting this one it would get the blocks, but I'm not, so it won't.

I've been thinking about the finish for this. Haven't really decided yet. I don't think my normal approach of an oil/varnish will fit the bill for this. I was maybe going to try nitro, but I fear that it may be too shiny.

What I want to capture is the luster. So if it's a satin, or semigloss, I don't know. I have a few pieces of scrap laying around, so I do have something to experiment with.

As far as the fingerboard is concerned, "patients grasshopper". I have some things I'm doing to the neck to get the head stock mounted. Once I get that done, the FB will get cut.

But it's going to be sunny and in the 70's for me for the next few days, so not much will get done on this bass.

Oil/varnish will seriously 'amber' that holly. Do you really want to turn it blond? If you want a non ambering finish I think you need acrylic, like the water-based 'polyurethane' finishes, which are actually acrylic in most cases. Check:
Using water based products for instrument finishing, Target Coatings 9000 6000 and Varathane WB
I used the ProFinisher on my first bass and got a really nice gloss finish with no yellow tint. You can make it satin as well. Crystal clear.

Do I really want to turn it blonde? NO!

The piece below is a test piece. Very quit and dirty test at that. On the right is Formbys Tung oil, on the left is Minwax Antiquing Oil. I just poured some on and let it sit over night. I want to get a feel for the color I'd get, and as you can see, they both turn an unwanted amber, as JayGunn indicates above.

I'll be trying some of the lightest schellac I have to see if that will color it at all.

Waiting in the background, I have some rattle can Nitro. This may be too shiney.
