Since the premise of the thread was "bands", I didn't mention them earlier, but now that solo acts have been brought up, here's three quirky female artists from the past 10 years or so that have caught my attention…

Some impressive non-mainstream bands recommended here.
I'm going to go more mainstream and mention Harry Styles. Yes, he's an ex-boy band guy, and he still has a following with many teenage girls. But he has a real band, and he writes grown-up songs and sounds great (I think). He's not a Timberlake pop character, but rather someone with a heavy Bowie/Beatles influence.

Somebody just yesterday turned me on to Sonar, and I've been digging a lot of their recordings! Looks like they started in 2010 and began releasing albums circa 2012.
