Finished watching Phantoms this morning. When the commanding general was assimilated into the creature the camera zoomed in on his nametag: Cloverfield.
Guess that's a sign, so I'll pick it up this afternoon.

it's an adaptation of a book by the same name. the name is a nod to the morrissey song 'let the right one slip in'. it's a "romantic horror" vampire movie that blows the genre a much-needed new face hole. it's not the annoying anne rice tragic/powerful vampire movie, it's not the buffy-esque every-vampire-is-a-natural-martial-artist-dressed-in-leather snooze-fest.
the best pre-viewing synopsis i can give is that it's about a 12 year old boy, oskar, in blackberg outside stockholm. he's bullied in school alot and meets a vampire one day. that's it. just take that and an open mind and watch that movie pronto. it's amazing.
my post-viewing synopsis/review i'll keep to myself until at least you've claimed to have seen the movie. because i think it's a movie that deserves not being spoiled. just try to watch it in a dark room with good sound. it makes a big difference when you get get 'inside' this one.
and yes, the 'climax' is absolutely incredible. the sound, the visuals, the feeling... and relatively subtle! just incredible.
and if you think about the film/book and the song from which their titles were inspired, it adds meaning to both which is quite rare and wonderful.

Picked up Cloverfield and Let The Right One In this evening. A friend of mine's band has a show tonight so I'll watch Right One after I get home.

I thought a prerequisite of the true horror fan was not having anyplace to go on a Friday night 
Let The Right One In may be the best vampire movie of the last 20 years.

Normally I'm at work on Friday nights but on vacation this week so I get to pretend I'm a normal person for once and actually go out and do something.
Honestly, that's the first vampire movie that left me feeling....."good".....after watching it. This is one great movie.
Make sure to watch it with subtitles though. I started watching it a second time with English overdubs and it just killed it.
i can't do language dubs. it bothers me. i read constantly, reading dialogue of a movie is not difficult. it doesn't detract from the action or the break the mood. at least not for me. subs are where it's at. i watch a LOT of foreign films, most of which were never brought over to the US in any fashion. i have folders upon folders of subtitle files, sometimes up to six for a single given movie, because they're translated by fans and people that care about getting it right, not nationalizing it. i like learning about the cultural differences in places and how various things don't translate literally or have many meanings. that's good.
Cloverfield: I hope they didn't pay much for that script. "Oh my god. Oh my god."
At first I was waiting for the movie to begin, thinking the hand held video part was just a prelude.....Then it dawned on me: "****, this IS the movie."
Oh well.
Watched the special features and the "making of" while fixing dinner and they revealed there that the creature was a newborn and that it added so much to the story. It did? I don't remember that ever being revealed IN the story.
And then the big deal about the secrecy involved making this movie....Whatever.
The director lamenting America not having a legendary monster of its own in the vein of Godzilla in Japan. Well, this one sure isn't it either.

Did you catch the part near the end where they finally get to the apartment and find the girl (was it a girl or a guy?), pry their body off the rebar that had been holding them down, and promptly were on the move? Rebar through the midsection. Seriously ridiculous by that point. 
I saw a new release of an old Dario Argento flick at best buy this weekend. Not really horror but murder mystery - "Four Flies on Grey Velvet" It's supposed to be in the giallo style similar to "Bird With the Crystal Plumage" which I liked a lot. I was tempted but at $20 I decided to wait for it to not sell for a while.

So then... not so good?
Yeah, that's totally unbelievable when compared to how ultra-realistic the movie was otherwise, with the 300-foot sea monster and all
I actually thought that was an iffy point as well. I love the movie though- I'm a fan of giant monster movies and it's much better than most. Ever see Dragon Wars?

That was just one of the many ridiculous oversights. Sure, I can have a piece of rebar jabbed through my midsection, be pinned under a solid concrete wall and bleed profusely for several hours and then get up and run away. Sure I can. Honest.
And my friends can come along and easily lift this slab of concrete off of me.
And everyone knows that the cell phone batteries in the electronics shops are all pre-charged and ready for use.
And of course, no one would notice this several hundred foot monster standing there until I run back to pick up my dropped camera. Where the heck did THAT come from?

I've seen it in the $9.00 rack at Walmart. I think that's as close as it will get to my DVD player though.
I like giant monster movies too....Just happened to think of the Ferris Bueller version of Godzilla. Anyone else notice how much effort they went to to make Godzilla's each and every footstep seem like an earthquake in the beginning? That lasted about ten minutes, then there were no more tremors. Guess he went on a crash diet.
