And what I say about MY perspective is also based on personal experience. I'm not saying you didn't face racism and xenophobia in Japan; in fact, I'm sure you probably did. A couple of my extended family members are Japanese (married into a Chinese family) and trust me, there were definitely issues there. There's a lot of intra-racial discrimination even amongst the different ethnic groups of Asians.

What REALLY is ironic is that you were telling me in this and other threads that Asians don't face racism in this country. Did you receive death threats in Japan for being white? Were you nearly beaten up? Because I sure have been here in the US, just for being Asian in a near-all white town.

The situation I grew up in was pretty unique. I've been called a "sellout" and "traitor" when I visited Taiwan (where my parents immigrated from) because I spoke very little mandarin Chinese and was "too American". Here in the US, I'm told to "go back to china you 'effin chink" and basically made to feel I don't belong here, despite having been BORN AND RAISED here, and being more patriotic and in-tune with American culture than even some white people I know. Yet, I'm always seen as a foreigner, and people must always insist that I speak Chinese for them or ask when I arrived in this country.

It's a lose-lose situation.

EDIT: I think it's obvious at this point that we are not going to come to an agreement. I just say that I do respect your views, and I can only hope that you try to put yourself in my shoes for a second and see where I am coming from. Soulgeezer, you know we've agreed on other stuff (gun laws, Mayhem etc.) so I don't see you as an atagonist or anything like that.

Alright, let's get this thread back on topic.

No, the lose-lose here is continuing this debate. You just pointed out at least two examples of Asian racism -- toward other Asians, no less! Yet, you claim that I as a white in Japan was not discriminated against because of my race and that American racism is somehow worse or different than the Asian variety.

Wrong. Racism is racism. Plain and simple. And, it's wrong in every case.

Does that mean it doesn't exist? Of course not. I never said Asians don't face discrimination in the US. I've told stories about holding my wife's head as she cried over the way she'd been treated by some extreme a-holes, only because she is Japanese. I know what discrimination looks like in this country and I know what it looks like in Japan. Racism is racism, but it can be expressed differently. And, institutionalized racism trumps individual racism every time.

By the way, who's making death threats against you? Or, assaulting you? Have you ever thought about calling the cops? If these things are being done to you because of your race, those are hate crimes. The police have a special division to find and punish the perpetrators.

Or, could it be that the chip you wear on your shoulder inspires people to dislike you? I know that the more I hear you whine, the more I tend to think that you *want* to be discriminated against, just so you'll have something to cry about. Damn, if I was with you right now, I'd probably try to slap some sense into you.

I'm done with this ridiculous debate. Be oppressed. Be downtrodden. Blame everybody else for your problems. If it makes you feel better, I'll be the white devil who's keeping you down.

Again, racism is wrong and sucks in every case and situation. Equally, for everybody.

Would you consider what the media does institutional or individual racism? I'm talking about the way they portray Asians in movies, on television, etc., and the way they kept describing the VA Tech shooter as "the Asian/Korean shooter" and focused so much on his ethnicity and the fact that he was an immigrant. I'm willing to bet this is what led to the multitude of anti-Asian hate crimes across college campuses such as Asian kids' cars being vandalized, getting threats, etc. Ironically, these never made network news. Coincidence?

As for the death threats and almost getting beaten up, the police actually were involved in that, but to a minor extent. I was at a local mall with some friends and a group of thugs (from my school's football team) started hurling racial slurs, encircled me, and were about to hit me when a police officer who was nearby came over and broke it up. He never arrested the thugs, just told them to leave and that they'd be arrested if they came back that evening.

Whining? Try more like raising awareness--what do you expect me to do if I encouter racism then, ignore it? What do YOU suggest I do? I will say this, many people in the 50s/60s said that the Blacks were "just whining" in what is the Civil Rights movement. I know I'm not fighting for legal rights, but I am fighting for being accepted as an equal in society. The laws are there to protect, but like you said earlier, they're not exactly always applied the way they should be.

And blaming everybody else for my problems? When have I ever done that? As if racism against me is MY fault? How is racism my fault besides that I'm a minority?

Vince - You are blaming way too many things on your race. You are in high school, people are going to pick on you and the cute girls are going to ignore you (unless you are captain of the football team - the rest of the hot girls are dating guys that are 19 to 24 years old…)

If you were not Asian and you wore a yellow shirt to school - the same kid would have picked on you and said "go back to yellow shirt land, you yellow shirt wearer…"

I've read a lot of your posts and you are way to wound up about all of this "race issue" BS.

I'm just a white dude, and I went to school with a bunch of white girls, and I didn't get any action. I didn't go around town whining that white girls won't date white men anymore because we are portrayed in the media as having small penises and being nerdy.

Just get over it already. /rant

AND ANOTHER THING… Am I the ONLY guy here that doesn't get the whole Asian attraction thing (maki syndrome) …I mean, I'm no racist and I really do find women of all races to be gorgeous, but if we're grouping based on race alone - I'd lump the Asian chicks together at the less attractive end of the spectrum not the more…
