House Soundman Outed by Digital Technology

If sound were simply a case of making what was onstage louder, then a sound guy could just place one mic to amplify everything. If it were just making it louder and adjusting the levels, then a few microphones and volume controls would be enough. But the racks of outboard gear on any serious PA (which you must have seen at your 5,000 seat festival assuming it was after 1983, which was the first time I did a 5,000 seat room and saw that level of production first hand) attest to the fact that the sound guy is going to change the band's sound, and the band and sound guy need to talk so that it can be done in a way the band like. IF the band have artistic control.

I got to a Pink Floyd show really early one time, and I was sitting in the balcony. The hall was still pretty empty, so I went down front where I could look down on the mixing station. The three guys in the mixer space were just sort of hanging and chatting, so I called down.

Me: Hi!
Sound guy: Hey, how's it goin'?
Me: Really great, looking forward to the show.
Sound guy: Cool.
Me: Can I ask a question?
Sound guy: Sure.
Me: How many channels are you running?
Sound guy looks at the wrap around consoles, does some quick math.
Sound guy: Um, two hundred and, uh, seven, I think.

It was a great show.

I suspect they were not using whatever house engineer showed up that night.
