How are Pink Floyd considered PROG rock?

The thing on the can is a label (a small piece of paper, fabric, plastic, or similar material attached to an object and giving information about it.) Prog Rock is a category (a class or division of people or things regarded as having particular shared characteristics). You can see from the definitions that Prog Rock is not a label.
But you could print a category on a label ;-)

It occurred to me that, Pink Floyd is more like Yes. Both are able to sell lots of long songs with odd time signatures (Money, Roundabout).
That's the polar opposite of King Crimson and Genesis, who sell loads of concept albums (Crimson King and Discipline; Selling England and Duke), but their hit singles are mostly short and poppy (Heartbeat; Invisible Touch).

and fell in love instantly...on another note, 42. Meshuggah - Destroy Erase Improve (1995), 39. Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet (2007), 29. Dream Theater - Metropolis 2: Scenes from a Memory (1999), 28. Opeth - Blackwater Park (2001) these are more progressive metal territory than progressive rock.
i'd have chosen Dream Theater's Images and Words instead, Opeth's Damnation, Porcupine Tree's Lightbulb Sun
as far as Pink Floyd, well they are the penultimate progressive band for me. Their ability to flirt with conventional popular song structure, utilization of odd time signatures, and introduce chord changes in a very subtle manner proves the point. that and the fact that they are timeless. I have to say though progressive rock is simply an umbrella and should be considered as such with so many branches or subgenres and particularities. I mean consider Tool and Dream Theater...think about it.
Aha. Got it. The problem that others in this thread are having is that they think you're talking about progressive rock---the original stuff from the '60s and '70s, with trippy album covers and exploratory music that could incorporate elements of any or all musical genres (except blues, R&B, or jazz, of course).
You're talking specifically about prog rock---the revivalists that started their bands in the late '80s and after. As you say, that's a rigidly defined niche category, populated by virtuoso musicians pledging allegiance to music of a bygone era, like the white retired dentists who are the only people still playing Dixieland.

A fair amount. I owned and listened to Leftoverture, PONR, Vinyl Confessions & Audio Visions quite a bit. Had monolith and that live album with the two little old ladies checking out the program on eight track. I liked them both but that format was so cumbersome.
For some reason I never considered them prog but you did convince me to go jam out with some Kansas.
