How did i get myself into this?????

Boy oh boy...........

well we have a gig coming up again. I get the E-mail informing me that we're going to play in Misquamicut (sp?) RI on a Monday early evening. ??????

With 7 in the band he's telling us we're going to get a c-note a head.

All I'm thinking is, $700? for a two hour gig on a monday? for us? I mean Them? as in......him?

Man they are going to run us out of town on a rail...........:hiding:

I can't wait. totally buying a disguise.

If it's the Ocean Mist in Misquamicut, that guy Kevin
will never pay 7 for a Monday.

He wants minimum a hundred people in the room and it
will hold up to 3 hundred. You have to draw them.

It's a great stage and a great room though. Good luck with it,
be curious to see how you make out.

What is the date btw? If I'm around I'll run by.

i think it's july 13th.

the bandleader can't get a straight answer about power availability, if they have a pa, inside or out, how loud/quiet you need to be, etc.

if it turns out to be a total train wreck where it costs me to go there and the performance by the front causes people to throw tomatoes either you or freaky fender is letting me sleep off my misery on your couch!!!!

They have a good PA system, a BIG stage with 2 SVT's and
Ampeg 8x10's. (They host a lot of touring reggae bands, so
the SVT's are standard issue.) There is a house soundman and board.
The stage is elevated about 2.5 feet. It is inside, you play facing towards
the dance floor, bar, balcony and ocean. There is a short drum riser on stage.

Load in was pretty easy as they control access to the parking
lot by the front door and the band has access. There is a small
dressing room back stage right.

Power was not an issue, plenty of outlets around the stage.
I did bring and use 1 extension cord.

I brought my own rig as I had no clue how beat up the Ampegs were. I saw
no point fighting for tone on I rig I don't really know well.

You can bring your own PA if you want and save the soundman's fee.
I think 70 bucks went to him, split between the 2 bands that night.
The second time we were there, we brought our own PA. The Sunn and
EV were ours, the Mackies hanging in the air were theirs.

I think I have a pic of me on that stage. I'll look for it and add
it if I find it to give you a feel for the stage.

well the day is almost here!

6 PM, monday, july 13th at the westerly town beach right near the concession area.

check out my sig, i fractured my elbow three weeks ago and my wife can't believe that i'm not using this as an excuse to run like heck.........

anyhow, things have improved as much as they're gonna. the backline is solid. great drummer, I'm not so bad even witha broken wing, the keyboard player is really coming along in his ability to play with a band, and we scored a 25 year old guitar player who kinda sings but is pretty smokin' on the old six string.

The mama cass chick is good when she likes the song, especially if it showcases her, but tends to sing unenthuiastically when she doesn't like the song and the spotlight isn't on her. the replacement michelle isn't bad at all. The new guitar player can sing ok, but playing is his forte'. the bandleader.....well, with less guitar duties he can focus more on singing but there is a bit of a lipstick on a pig thing. really nice guy though.....

so come on down! we're gonna end with the age of aquarius/let the sunshine in medley from hair so it shuld be super groovy............dig

I won't make it, but a guy who sits next to me at work lives
there and probably will. His name is Carmine and I posted a
pic of him once at the office in a French maid's dress in the
'What does work look like' thread.

I told him to say hi to you. If it's raining he won't show.
But it never rains here.

6 pm monday july 13th.......

that's gonna be where it all comes down

no chance of that shirt, this time he wants me to wear my dashiki (sp?)

he actually managed to book us for several fairs, festivals, etc this year. d'oh!

the great ting is he has a large pa rack for big gigs with every effect that musician's friend took a full page ad out on to tell you how it saved someone's life. The drummer/pro recording engineer and I stripped it and set it up properly on tuesday. we ganged up on him so he just stood there helplessly. It was awesome.

The bandana shirt, the dashiki...this little band of yours wouldn't be that obscure, unknown little group that goes by the name of Earth, Wind, and Fire would it? :D

dirt, hot air, and ashes........that's us. But surprisingly missing a gong.

After all the work that went into revamping his big pa for the gig turns out he calls the venue (town of westerly i think), less than 1 week before the show, and gets them to hire the sound co that was there the week before to do sound for us to the tune of $500. Swears up and down that this will not affect what we get paid.

not terrible...........

i need to get some pix and video footage as there was a guy there who looked like one of the characters in the "freedom rock" ads. he must have seen our advertisement as a mamas and papas trib act as he brought one of his original albums to the show and danced around like he was at woodstock.

strangest thing was the incredible amount of wind coming off the ocean. not that that was strange, but a few songs in i realize that my hands, my strings and the neck of the bass are slowly getting coated with a fine layer of salt. made it very difficult to play. i had a few glitches where i literally got stuck on the neck or the strings because of how tacky everything was getting.

concept wise, i have to say the band is solid. trib bands get booked in larger vanues, fairs, festivals, etc. And, no one has a mamas and papas trib band. I think the bandleader should come up with ideas and book shows. but maybe not be IN the bands.............:hiding:
