Born and raised in Manitowoc WI
Only worked two places in my life
A part time gig at a local foundry till 10/31/1971 full time from 11/1/71 -04/31/2019 47.5 years different owners same place
Earned 3 college degrees along the way and a weekend warrior bassist since 1977

Everyone's stories are really fascinating to me. It does seem like family often holds a big sway, and it makes sense and is a big consideration for us as well (Michigan would be the same comfortable mix as where we are now of close enough to easily visit but far enough to guarantee no unexpected drop-ins by in-laws haha), but everyone has very specific circumstances which lead to where they are. Thank you all for sharing!
I completed graduate school during the recession so after 2 years of no full time employment, I moved cross country for the first full time job that came through. I've lost my taste for San Francisco 7 years later.
My dad was from Roanoke. I have not been there since I was very young but I remember it was quite a beautiful drive to get there from Baltimore, which is where I am from.
Baltimore > DC > Philadelphia > Central PA > Sacramento
Moved to DC to pursue musical opportunities at the age of 19, traveled around from that city as my base for a decade, quit music then took a job in Philadelphia and also sang for a few years in a band there, moved to central PA with a significant other, that life eventually blew up, and shortly thereafter a friend offered me a place to stay and a job possibility in Sacramento so I came out here, got a job, got married, worked, retired, started my own business, got back to music, and I've been here ever since. We think about moving sometimes, but right now I'm okay with where I am.
I chose the last option on the list.
Lots of planning and then a giant leap.
When retirement for us became a thing to plan for we decided that we wanted to live in France. As my Dad was born in Poland I qualified for Polish citizenship, and as a citizen of the European Union I could move to France (and bring the wife) with no visa needed (thanks Dad). We made a month long trip to France to see where we wanted to live, and could afford to live, and decided on France's third largest city. We set a date, sold the house in the US and almost everything in it, and moved. The best decision we've ever made.

I’m the second generation born and raised in this city (Ottawa). My paternal grandparents came here in the mid 1930s from rural Saskatchewan. Grandfather had a freshly minted degree and ultimately became the CFO of one of the hospitals here. His line had settled in Cape Breton in the 1790s from Scotland (with a brief stop in Rhode Island). My great-grandfather worked as a stationmaster for the railway and transferred to Sask in the early 1900s. Moms side of the family, around the same time came from France and settled in Montreal then eventually Eastern Ontario. So, I’m a full seventh generation Canadian on both sides of the family.
Aside from the weather, I really saw no reason to leave. My real options would have been Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver, so......
Got myself a world class education locally, was lucky to jump into an excellent career locally (“company town” aka federal government). Live in a neighborhood two blocks away from where my parents grew up (two blocks one way for my dad, two blocks the other way for my mom). Wife’s family came here from Calgary when she was a kid. She grew up in this neighbourhood as well. My daughter, wife and father all went to the same primary and middle schools.
I didn’t really know how to vote. Family is the reason I’m here. It was my decision to stay.

I was born in southern West Virginia since my parents were born and raised there. We moved to upstate South Carolina when I was 5 for a job opportunity my dad wanted to take. Lived there until I was 30, then moved to Atlanta for my long distance girlfriend. That didn't last, but I stayed there anyway and eventually met my wife. In 2018, we decided to try something totally different and move to Montreal, Canada (she's a dual US/Canadian citizen). We spent a year there, but decided to return to the states in 2019 due to unforeseen obstacles and challenges.
We're now in a suburb of Baltimore, MD. One of my wife's best friends lives here, and since we weren't keen on returning to Atlanta last year, we decided to give this area a try based on the friend's recommendation. To be honest, we haven't enjoyed it much. It's too suburban, and we've realized we're city people. And we miss our ATL friends a lot. So we're leaning towards moving back to ATL once all the COVID-19 settles down. We don't have kids, so it's easy for us to pick up and go if we want to.

after years of hard work , bought some land and moved out to the countryside ten years ago .
... love the laidback lifestyle , our nearest neighbor at least two acres away .
nearest small town is about fifteen miles , nearest big town about thirty five .

I was born and raised in southern Michigan. Never wanted to live anywhere else. Northern Michigan is beautiful but you can’t get away from the winters. They are long and the sun never shines. If you like the outdoors, hunting, fishing, skiing, boating, etc it is a great place to live. If you like the sunshine, we’ll, not so much....
