How do in ear monitors work?

To the OP -
Basically.. you put "headphones" in your ear.. like buds you use with your smartphone.
There are 2 types of IEM - universal fit, and custom molds.
  • Customs require molds being made by an audiologist, which you send off, then get back a set of IEM's that FIT YOUR ears. They can have MANY drivers (speakers) per ear (I think 16 is the max now). The more drivers, the higher the price. The fit (seal is VERY important for bass) is generally better, but you pay a premium.
  • Universals come with a number of different sized tips (to fit different sized ears) and are cheaper than customs. Audio quality with multiple drivers is on a par with customs.
There are two methods of getting the "signal" to your buds
  • thru a wireless system or
  • wired.
Wireless will be more expensive, but gives you freedom of movement.
Wired means you are tethered. If your bass is not already wireless, then wired may work fine for you.

Some will claim this is bad advice, but it works well for me. I do the 1 ear and 1 ear out method with the 1 side in on the drummer side to cancel (usually) the ride/crash cymbals and snare rim shots. Then I mix individual instruments or groups as desired. Finally, I "master" the overall level up to whatever the volume is that I'm hearing on the opposite side.

I also like to use an amp so I can feel the notes. I, like many others, don't get great bass sound out of my IEM, and that impacts my playing. If I don't sound good, I often don't play as well or get into it as much.

The interesting part about playing with both the IEM and an amp (bass monitor) is that you can mix everything so the aggregate is a great bass tone. To accomplish this, my basic approach is to let the house handle the sub-bass frequencies, so cut them out of my IEM and cab so things don't get mushy or muddy. I cut some of the highs out of the cab and boost it a bit in my IEM since I often can't hear them since my cab is on the floor and not near ear level. I let the cab handle most of low-mids (punch) and true mids. The overall effect is pretty cool, and takes advantage of what I perceive to be the strengths of each piece of gear, the stage, and house sound setups.
 
Here's a diagram of an Aviom-brand IEM setup, which my church uses:

Simplified: All channels from the mixer are converted to a digital signal and sent to a distribution box over a CAT-5 cable. Each person has a personal mixer on a mic stand clamp. It is connected to the distribution box via CAT-5. From the mixer, you can adjust your own mix with levels and panning. The output is 1/4" stereo to however you want to hear the signal: cans, IEMs, wireless transmitter to your IEMs, powered floor wedge, etc.

Typically, an ambient mic will be used to pick up the room so you don't feel completely isolated. With regular use over five years, I do not want to use floor monitors ever again.

how do in-ears work? I don't fully understand. It's like I read that amps aren't used and musicians just plug into the bored or the fobass not of the house. Or if they do have amps they're turned down I like 2. How does this whole thing work. I would just like to understand it.

You can still use amps onstage with IEM's if it's part of your sound, many bands do, but you don't actually need them at all since everyone customized monitor in their ears.

Geddy Lee has toured for years with household appliances on stage instead of amps ;)
 
IEMs basically means using headphones instead of wedges for stage monitors. Most people prefer low profile earbuds, but over-the-ear cans works just as well. (Some drummers like to use hi-isolation cans.) In most cases you replace the wedge speaker and amp with a headphone amp and headphones. You could send exactly the same monitor mix to your headphones that you do to the stage wedges, but usually this is not sufficient. Normal wedge-based monitors have lots of vocals and little or none of anything else. (I am talking your average bar gig.) That's because we can hear bass, guitar, drums, keys, horns, etc. from the stage with little problem. Additionally, sending these instruments to the monitor mix often creates more problems than it solves. With the headphones on, these instruments get harder to hear. The solution is to send these sounds to the monitor mix as well. Since the sound from the monitor is not bouncing around the stage along with the amp sound, this is OK. It still sounds pretty good. This is the first stage of in ear monitoring: a single, mono mix shared by all members of the band.

From there you can add more complexity such as an individual mono mix. In this case each musician gets a different mono mix. This make it easier to hear yourself or queues from other instruments that your rely on. For example, the bass player may want a little guitar, some vocals, lots of kick, some snare and lots of bass. Once you get to this level, the next leap is an individual stereo mix. This is similar to the mono mix, but makes hear the parts easier and less fatiguing.
 
I use a Mackie mix 5 as a sub board so I have more control of what I’m hearing. Played my first show with them recently, and iem’s are where it’s at. Also not having to contend with wedges for stage space is so nice.

ALL of the "experts" (and I don't claim to resemble one) will tell that is exactly what NOT TO DO with IEM's.
Their reasoning is as follows.
You will ALWAYS turn UP the volume in the IEM ear to "match" the external level in the non-IEM ear.
This does GREATER DAMAGE to your ears than NOT using an IEM, because you're putting a louder volume right next to your ear (vs from a wedge).
The whole point of IEM's is to monitor at MUCH LOWER volumes.
The one ear in, one out approach is VERY much frowned upon.

I love IEM's. They are so much better than wedges - IMHO. When I take mine out at a gig or at church even, I can't believe how loud the talking is. With the right system you can run your own mix with your phone. It doesn't have to be wireless or expensive. Our singer is wireless but the drummer, keys and I (people who don't move on stage) use wired systems that cut the costs significantly.

We run a silent stage, meaning there are no amps. Our guitar player even uses a new Blackstar amp the sounds AMAZING via the DI. Electronic drums, bass DI, Keys DI. The only stage noise is the drumsticks clicking on the heads and singing. Makes mixing so much easier with no stage amps and drums to fight. Clean set up. Light weight. Can pull up the same mix for every band and venue.

You do need the right gear to make it work. A mixer with enough monitor outs is key.
 
This addresses the implementation of IEMs and using them with various scenarios. I wrote this a couple of years ago, but I think it has some really good information in it:

First you need to decide how you're going to be using it. If your expecting to roll into a venue with a house system and expect them to just plug it in and go, prepare to be disappointed. Unless you advance the idea well ahead of time with the house tech and you're the only band on the bill, the time it takes to create a suitable monitor mix for your IEM system may well cut into your set time. Especially if they're running monitors from FOH. Most are simply not set up to incorporate them or adequately mix them.

If you plan on putting together a integrated IEM system for your group to use, you're now talking about a dedicated monitor mixer (or digital mixer with suitable outputs), a split snake, a mic package, as many individual systems as needed for your band, antenna combiner, paddles and a rack to put it all in. To do it right you need to have everything going through your mixer to get to your IEMs. You can't rely on mic bleed to get it there and if your earphones are fitted properly, there will be an extremely significant reduction of sound getting in from the outside. And don't forget ambient mics to be able to hear your audience. And again, if your planning on rolling into a venue on a multi-band throw and go bill, getting the house tech to integrate your system is likely going to be an uphill battle without proper advancing.

Having said all that, if you're running your own board the majority of the time and just want to add IEMs for you and you mic everything, it can easily be done. My system preference, after several trial and error runs, is the Sennheiser EW 300 Series. There are cheaper systems out there such as the Galaxy Audio or Carvin which work but are limited in features, sound quality or other factors. Other reliable brands such as Shure, Audio Technica, etc. offer good options as well. But remember, this is how you will hear everything. Get the best you can afford and be sure to check the frequencies it uses against what's open your area. Sennheiser has a chart online to help you select the right frequency band for your use. I use the A Band as it seems to have enough open frequencies in the western United States.

The actual in ear earphone phones are about as personal of a choice as it gets. Again, this is not where you want to cheap out. I use a set of custom molded Westone ES-10 earphones and some old Shure E2s for back up. I also keep spare cables for the Westones on hand. The earphones that come with a new unit are generally barely adequate because most people have a personal preference anyway and are most likely going to upgrade. Custom molds are worth every penny. It is a mold of your ear so they seal very well, block outside sound and have better low end response.

If your going to monitor in stereo you'll be using two aux sends on your board. This is not an issue on most digital boards as they offer more output options but will eat up aux mixes quickly on analogue mixers that aren't dedicated monitor mixers. Many will tell you that you don't need to run stereo monitors. I tend to disagree because I have two ears and hear in stereo. Stereo also allows you to place instruments within that stereo field and that separation makes for a much more pleasant mix to listen to.

If your a drummer or keyboard player there are hardwired options that will save some money compared to wireless but your choice of earphones would be the same as above.

Now the don'ts, or at least shouldn'ts. Do not use only one side of the earphones at a time. You'll end up cranking the in ears to keep up with the open side and possibly damaging your hearing. Being able to monitor yourself at reasonable levels was one of the benefits of IEM. If you are researching this on the internet you will undoubtedly come across some version of the "poor man's in ear monitor" at some point. This is usually a cheap POS headphone amp into some cheap earphones. Don't. Just don't. A true IEM system will have built in limiters that act very quickly to clamp down the output when needed. Without it, when your singer decides to jam his mic into the horn of his wedge or your guitarist decides that 11 isn't loud enough, you basically get an ice pick to your ear drums. Hearing damage is often irreversible. It maybe too late to stop the damage you've done so far, but it's never too late to keep it from getting worse.

That should give you some things to think about. There's lots more to know and lots of people more than willing to tell you their cheap it's-good-enough stories. Find a professional website forum and do a search there. Read every thread you can. Remember, you're not breaking new ground here. Most of your questions have probably been answered but don't be afraid to ask questions if you don't understand something. If you are a singer be sure to read up on the occlusion effect. Stick your fingers in your ears and sing and listen to the sound of your voice. That's the occlusion effect and it becomes a big factor in what you hear with IEMs. Good luck!

Kind of a side note this reminds me of. At a church we went to a few years ago I was one of the sound guys. We had a guitar “player”/“singer” that thought he was really good and refused to take no for an answer about being in the worship band. Thank goodness we always had 2 or 3 guitar players on stage. This guy had IEMs. No onstage amps, everything went through the house. It was really easy to set his monitor so he thought he was being heard. We put zero of his guitar or mic in the main out.

The problem with adjusting to IEMs is that you are not used to hearing the direct sound of your bass. If you spend some time and money on your direct sound, I think you can find something you like. (Assuming you can live without the pants flapping effect.) For me, having a good speaker sim, (eq), and DI pedal at the end of the effects chain made a huge difference.

Think of them as really expensive and really high quality earbuds ... basically they run from a feed from the mixer. The system I used to use had 5 volume controls so each person in the band could customize his own mix.
 
The first thing to consider is how are you going to connect your IEM system to the monitor feed. If your group is using their own PA system and there is a spare AUX send or you can tap the existing AUX send, then this is a no brainer. A good simple system to use is a Rolls headphone amp and a pair of whatever ear buds you currently have. I prefer the Rolls PM55P. It's about $80. It has a built-in hard limiter. This comes in handy when your guitar player drops his ax on the stage or smacks a mic stand. Otherwise you have no barrier to the deafening spike hitting your ears hard. If you want to step up your game, I would recommend a more pro set of earbuds. I know some people who love the mee audio buds. They are under $80. Bass players will really benefit from dual or triple driver systems. That starts to get into the $200 range. I think the problem most people run into with IEMs is trying to go too cheap. They end up not liking what they hear and give up all together. I suggest you try to get the best system you can comfortably afford.
 
There's lots of ways, and all are good. I need an amp on stage, or the few times I've gone without, then I need 15" monitors. I can't get by without feeling the low end.
In my ears I want- a vocal mix, with me prominent, rhythm guitar, HI HAT (it establishes the groove) and some kick, and bass, I also need an audience feed, so I don't feel isolated. A mic taped near the board, or even the TB mic are fine. In the wedges- kick always, and bass if I need it.
 
BTW, if you have a small mixer hanging around, you can use this to test out an IEM system without spending the money. This is how my band members started. They each had a small, cheap mixer. Each mixer got an aux feed. Then they plugged whatever headphones they had around into the mixer. Once we were certain this was going to work well for us, we each started to invest in a good system.

+1000% - been ampless since Oct 16'... tho, due to changing bands, may have to go back to an "amp onstage" even tho I still plan to use my IEM system (Senn G3, 1964 A8's).
