My Gas goes in waves but is seems to really focus back on tone a whole lot. Aesthetics is a weird beast and I can usually hold off on a purchase if aesthetics is a major driver. Tone and the endless pursuit of it's enjoyment is an expensive one for me. For example at the moment I just pulled the trigger on my first bass in 1.5 years because i know it is a tone monster and the price was right. I bought a Warwick FNA jazzman and I don't have and have never played a MM pickup style bass and so gas was strong on this. I am also building a bass with a filter preamp and multicoil pickups to get myself as close as I can to the near unobtainable Wal tone I would really love to have.
I honestly think my ultimate Gas of owning a Wal is going to happen though...Wal basses are not the most aesthetically pleasing instruments i could own but that tone is like no other and it drives gas very hard. To own a Wal would mean not purchasing any other music gear for a long time and I think I am at the point now that I am happy with everything I have (which is far too much).
