How do you catch a Skunk?

AAAAAHAHAHAH! Skunk removal! I remember vividly...

A burrow was begun at the side of our shed. We install a small rodent sized bear trap. Ankle jaw style trap. Couple days later, the chain is pulled all the way underneath. We leave it for a week. We finally decide to pull it outta there. IT'S STILL ALIVE AND FIGHTING. So I command my brother to get my CO2 pellet rifle and take position at the other end of the yard. He bellyflops and sights in through the scope. I start pulling the chain. He starts coming to the opening. In order for me to continue pulling, I gotta move so I can get the chain unstuck. I block my brother's shot. I'm squatting, about 12 feet away. Skunk rears up and fires. I get hit from 12 feet away. I start retching. My brother shouts, I finally move, he plunks 12-15 rounds into his stinking arse. Dead Skunk. We then realise just how brutal a full spray from a skunk really is. I'm puking. Then we catch a whiff of the dead skunk.

FAR EXCEEDS STENCH OF LIVING SKUNK.

Brother runs to grocery mart for tomato sauce, and I continue retching in the back yard.

As someone who has trapped before...

if you shoot it with a .22, do NOT shoot it in the head. It will spray every time. Use a .22 short, and shoot it through the heart, right behind the front legs. Once. Mostly, they won't spray if you do it in this way.

Alternatively, you can affix a syringe onto the end of a long pole and fill it with 10cc's of acetone. Inject the skunk. It will get drowsy and go into the big sleep gently.

Really? I've had good luck with head shots (maybe two or three over the years).

That's what the conventional wisdom says... you're lucky I guess! A good solid head shot usually results in the muscle spasming and convulsing that occurs when every nerve in the body short-circuits from the instant destruction of the skunk's CPU.

But hey, if it works for you, it works! Just make sure the tail is facing the other way, no matter what method you use!
