How do you escape "small town" USA?

There has to be a worst thread ever on TB, and if were nominating one, I think this would be the one. Someone asked a simple question of how to get a better job in a bigger city. There have been a few good replies, but quite a few seem judgmental, arrogant, insulting, and useless.

I think what several posters seem to be communicating, in a zen-master way, is: "Start preparing yourself now for the judgmental, arrogant, insulting, and useless people you will no doubt encounter when you move to the big city." :)

Every time I've been through SC I just wanted to GTFO. I can't imagine living there. Ugh. Good luck getting away. Charlotte actually isn't bad for connections since people come from all over the country to work downtown there.

Asheville, NC. It isn't that far away either. Possibly Winston-Salem too though it's mostly hipsters and rockabilly music. =\

You're still going to find more churches than people though. Still going to find "big foot" trucks with gun racks and rebel flags on them everywhere. So long as you're in the south you always will. Sucks doesn't it?

You don't even need that, you can have a job lined up if you get yourself properly planned and setup.

A friend of mine is moving a bit over 200 miles next month, is moving into his new flat down there, 4-5 days before the job starts.

1. stock up on ramen
2. Sell everything you dont need
3. Pack what you think you will need and just go.


I did this about 4 years ago when i moved to pittsburgh. Put stuff i could not sell in storage (i.e. friends basement)
Met some people on myspace, moved in with them. got a job at a market. It's never gonna be good from the start. A great site if you are gonna find yourself sleeping in your car is CouchSurfing - Participate in Creating a Better World, One Couch At A Time

See who is in the town and go from there. Time to nut up or shut up.

Ive got some GOOD advice on this thread. I have taken note of it.

I have only really replied to the suggestions I didnt think we feasiable for me.

SO it just looks like Im knocking them all.

I came to this conclusion on the first page of this thread. The OP has the desire to move, but no where near enough resources to make things happen.
He's certainly not at a point where he is willing to get out at any cost, so he's got a lot of time to wait and save if he plans on ever making this move a reality.

I told you my parents are helping me pay bills. I have no money left over to save!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ive cut out all the non essentials. No cable. No gym. No junk food. No DVDs or music. No social life. My life is ****.

Believe me, I live in a piece of ****, redneck, racist, backwood, hillbillys and banjos, welfare ridden, squeal like a pig, cess pool.. there are no jobs here!!!!!!
