I was once asked by an avid golfer why I had so many basses (I was having them delivered to his office out of convenience); I asked him how many clubs he carried in his bag when he golfed. Different clubs for different situations; same with basses.

not meant at the OP personally, but I like the show -

^^^^
don't know much about golf, but definitely true with basses. I play many different situations both musically and sonically. I like having the right tool for the job.

Because I make 6 to 10 times that a year playing it.... and it isn't my full time gig.

But while we are at it.... I know a lot of folks who say they cant afford a $1000 bass....but spend that and more annually on a smart phone cell bill when a flip phone would work fine....or that much and more annually on a cable TV and internet bill. Get my point.... That said I spend about $5000 a year on cell phone and cable/internet bills. I certainly don't have any qualms spending a grand on a bass..... I am a bass player...

Kick @#% show.

Personally, I like good gear. Anything that isn't up to snuff will just ruin my day...

At the end of the day, pricing makes no difference. What sounds good and plays well does just that, be it a $185 Yamaha RBX175 (which are killer basses- by the way) or a $3000 Sadowsky (which I love but haven't had the free spending money to purchase,) and anything less will make you less happy than you could be if you had exactly what you want.

While you're at it, maybe someone can justify:

Diamond engagement rings
Luxury/sports cars
Tickets to sporting events
Etc...

High priced basses - I just dig them. I have the money. Really that simple.

Diamond engagement ring - I had the money. Tradition. I loved the girl. It worked. 5 years and two kids later I'm glad that a diamond is all it took to lock her down.

Luxury sports cars - Not my thing. But I have the money. I like to go fast. I may buy one some day.

Tickets to Sporting Events - I have the money. I love the Red Sox and racing. So does my wife. I like the Redskins and so does my dad. Good times and good memories.

Do any of these things really need an explanation?

In all seriousness now that I've had my fun, I agree with the sentiments that it just plain needs no justification. One either has the funds, plies his trade and needs good tools, or they just want them, no harm no foul. Some people buy the glitzy cars and McMansions, and this is considerably less spendy to me...You've identified yourself as a hobbyist bassist, and well, there you go...others take it much more seriously, and either warrant or demand more from their gear as a result.
