Are you sure that what you are saying here (all of it) is true?
I can't substantiate any of that, unfortunately.

However, I AM somewhat sure that Ed is essentially "hired" by companies at least sometimes to get their stuff checked out. He plays the heck out of the gear in his youtube videos and with that, he leaves it up to us to make a judgment with our own ears. If a certain piece of gear interests us, it's up to us to go check it out personally. As I said before, he is less of a critic than he is a showcaser.
I may actually like his work better that way, though. He's a very experienced, versatile player (I've recently finished his slap bass dvd and now I'm TRYING to learn from his difficult improv book!) so simply playing another lick without wasting his breath is just as helpful to me. Getting into a "FINAL VERDICT: 8.5/10 or 8.7/10??" is just not his style.
