How does your band choose songs?

Most of us have similar tastes in music, so we stick to bands we know we all like and enjoy playing! Before starting to rehearse our covers for the next gigs we usually put out a bunch of names and sit on them for a while, listening and internalizing.

It's almost always a group decision, but if our singer doesn't like the style of singing, the song's out

The list in the beginning was what we knew, later on and now it is when a lot of people ask us to do a certain song then we decided if it works for all members? If it does, it hits the list. If not that we pickup on what hits the juke box if they are paying to hear it maybe we should be playing it! We keep the list fresh an alive that way. And because of this people came coming out to show after show. Oh yeah with the juke box thing sometimes people will play a song we are going to do and we get a kick out of giving it to them again but this time live and in their face!

One of our guitarists is a bit of a musical library, so he'll usually throw out the head of a song in the middle of a jam or solo and if the rest of us catch on we'll slowly work our way into it as a bit of a medley. If the medley section goes down well enough we'll often opt to learn the full song or figure out a way to sample it more often.

We do this with songs like Sweet Child of Mine, Baba O'Reilly, Chalkdust Torture, Wilson, Chameleon, etc...

For the record, my impression of Axl Rose singing is second to none :hiding:

We'll also throw out songs we should just learn because most of us like them and would like to at least play them once in a band setting. We're adding Sabotage, All the Small Things, and Hell Song to our setlist just because some of us grew up listening to those songs and want to hear what they sound like when we do them. Personally, I think they'll go down well either way.
