How good do you think you are?

Becarful, pro-level is also subjective.

Pro level could mean you played with the best cats in your high school ( we don't know your age) Or you may have played with several internationally famous rock bands.

The last band I made money in was with Glen Sobel (Alice Cooper) on drums and Alejandro Garcia (Shakira, Julio Iglesias) on guitar. I'm 21, btw. I'm hoping to get another gig like that sometime soon!

... as a bass/player musician?

I'm alright but I think I got lucky. I've pretty much be coasting on natural abilities for a few years now.

Is it important to you to feel successful?

If by "successful" you mean, "accomplished as a musician", then yes.

Is it important to you that your peers see you as successful?

Not really. As long as they know I don't suck.

Do you have something to prove?

Only to myself.

How do you measure your own success?

By how well I can play the music I enjoy listening to.

How do you think others measure your success in their minds?

I haven't the slightest clue. I don't think others really think about my musical success.

Do you think of TB as a place where you can compare yourself against others and measure your success?

Not really. I'm just here for the lolz at this point.

Do you think your own sense of status on TB translates to status in the real world?

ROFL! HELLZ NAW! But it's fun to get recognized in and chat it up with other TBers in the real world.

Do you think people on TB look up to other TBers they see as successful?

Absolutely. And with good reason too.

Just some thought provoking questions.

I'd say so :).

Good enough to be hired by a world class songwriter/entertainer and spend 9 months in the studio recording and then be first call for gigs and travel.
Only took 35 years of struggle and practice to get here!
First 30 years spent practicing 3-5 hours a day and playing 100+ gigs a year for $75-$100 a night. Now I have a house that is paid off, a 35 foot sailboat that is paid off, $150k in my checking account and get 200 days off a year.
I have worked really hard but also been really lucky.

Please send a blank check payable to:

The definition of success?

  • Of course!
  • Depends if I want to play with them or not
  • Not at all.
  • By my level of satisfaction
  • By my experience ... who I played with, where
  • TB? Nah, it's the internet, man!
  • Ditto

sure, why not? doesn't impact me in any possible way. i did include ":D" which means (in context) "i'm not really jealous". i was simultaneously making fun of my on stated yardstick(which i've been thinking about a lot in the past 15 hrs and may be seriously misguided) and at the dude who is POSSIBLY so insecure he needs to share bank account figures on the internet. but i was being subtle (cos i don't like to be rude).

plus i genuinely don't care how much money dude has. unless i'm about to get some of it.

Hmmm, you must not be from Jersey. I thought I was being subtle. :)

Why would anyone keep large sums in their CHECKING account? People, I'm in Finance, and I advise you not to do this.

How good do I think I am? At WHAT?

Playing bass? I'm the best bass player in the world for the songs I'm playing; I play them correctly. If you put me in as Stanley Clarke's fill-in, I would be booed off the stage.

Singing? I'm better than a world class singer (Bob Dylan,) and not as good as some guy we've never heard of, singing in his basement.

Performing? My back gets sore, and I get tired, and so I stop jumping around as much, and everyone says that's a good thing, because they weren't that thrilled with my jumping around.

Harmonica? I was told by a celebrated blues player (who shall remain nameless,) that I am "no harp player." So I always remember that when I play harp.

Guitar? I think I suck. I mean S-U-C-K SUCK. And yet I continue to do it.

Insanity? Me think me might be REAL good, but me disagree with I.

Lover? The best, baby; the BEST.

Then, I would consider those pro level opportunities.

A good friend of mine played drums for Julio a few years ago, then toured with Billy Joel.

I wish I had the connections to audition for a national act.

I like where your heads at. It's all relative.

I have a show this afternoon , outside, it's 98 degrees. I hope I can play well and deal with the heat.

Wish I could break my no shorts rule, but I'm not wearing boots, low top converses no laces no socks.

I have long been of the opinion that as long as I'm getting paid to play, it doesn't matter whether I think I'm any good or anyone else thinks I'm any good. (We've established what I am, we're just haggling over the price :D)

In my world, anyway, it has turned out to be a good idea to put my ego in my pocket when I go out on a gig. If I find myself thinking (rightly or wrongly) that I'm being taken for granted, I just think of Gary Tallent's line, I can't quote it exactly, but it's something like "Nobody says anything about what I'm doing until I stop doing it."

I come to TB to learn, and TB has been very good to me on that score!

PS: There is one thing...In my old age I have lost patience with drunks who want to tell me how great I am. I know I'm supposed to be nice to the people who say nice things, no matter what condition they're in, but you know, enough already.

I think that being a musician that actually gets up on a stage, in front of people, is a little similar to being an MMA fighter(a prime example). YOU HAVE TO BE CONFIDENT IN YOUR SKILLS. If not, your're gonna go out there and get slayed.
IMO, part of being a COMPLETE PLAYER is having a type of confidence that's, I guess you could describe as almost "borderline cocky". There's a very, very fine line between confidence, and cockiness. It's also a line that takes Y-E-A-R-S to find. Some people cross it, some don't. And for me? I MUCH PREFER not to be around the ones that cross that line!! Yeah, I'm mostly referring to all you singers and guitarists. You know who you are. Lol

this is a great thread. really made me think about some of my answers, thanks.

but the world wants to know: dbcrocky, how good do you think you are?

I think I am a really good at rock improvisation, in the vein of John Entwistle and Dave Schools. I think I am good at writing bass parts and contributing to arrangements in the context of an originals band. I think I am a good choice for some projects and a bad choice for many others.

I think the true meaning of good self esteem is the belief that you are no better and no worse than everybody else.

Edit: I just checked my checking account and it currently has $1613.39

I have worked really hard but also been really lucky.

This is why I feel music careers are almost sad.

A performer on the upper fringes of success, after a lifetime of work and luck, pulls in about as much as a sorority-bred Verizon store manager. With twice the workload and no benefits. And feels it is so wonderful that it is to be bragged about.

The work required to make it in this industry compared to the potential payoff makes the lotto look like a sound business plan.

... as a bass/player musician?

Is it important to you to feel successful?
No
Is it important to you that your peers see you as successful?
Not at all
Do you have something to prove?
To myself and it always be that way
How do you measure your own success?
Each time I can play something that I couldn't few weeks ago ... I've made some progress or each time we complete an instrumental that we like
How do you think others measure your success in their minds?
Some people may think I'm unsuccessful because I don't make money of playing music, that I practice too much, that I don't play rock cover to please a crowd.
By the way ... I never saw a cover band where I live ... it is only orginal act or tribute band ( Beatle, Phil Colins, Alcoholica, Johnny Cash, etc )

Do you think of TB as a place where you can compare yourself against others and measure your success?
Oh no ! Too many enterteiner.
Do you think your own sense of status on TB translates to status in the real world?
What a joke, you're a funny man.
Do you think people on TB look up to other TBers they see as successful?
Yes but in the same time ... few people go to the right people like Anthony Wellington, Micheal Manring, Adam Nitti, Todd Johnson etc

Just some thought provoking questions.

So in all ... I don't think I'm the right musician for a place like this, every day I'm remember why.
