How High Do You Crank Your Volume?

I run the Gain on my Trace Elliot almost all the way up but thats cause it says to make it as high as possible then the volume it about half running into the crown power amp.
Bass - Wide open (V & T entirely bypassed or removed, in fact; Pickups in parallel straight to the jack.)
Pre - 9.5ish
Master - 2-3
Average - 6
Peavey 450W 1x15 DataBass. Definitely not underpowered. . .
Yes, I've blown cones, usually outdoors.

With this little monster instead of a sans amp on 20!:
it has 90 dB of gain and with the bass guitar on 1 I think I could probably overdrive my output stage with the master on less than 1 if I plug it in the return

Right now I run a Demeter Preamp into the power amp section of an AMP BH 260, using an Eden XL210T. So, the power amp section is full on, and I set the volume on the Demeter at between 3 and 5. (10-11 o'clock, max).
What I'm surprised about is guys not running their basses full open on volume. In fact, I'm gonna start a thread on that....

Around 7 right now, but I know I'm slightly underpowered, since my amp isn't technically a bass amp.
I'm working on stealing a few pedals off of ebay that I can use for preamp purposes, since I'd really prefer to be running the master at <=5.

How do I measure the setting on a scale from 1-10, when my amp has THREE gain controls? As do many other amps? In addition to the output of my bass, and its own gain control?

I guess it'd be 4 or 5? My head's pretty damn loud, and the only things that are clear are where "0" and "11" are.

I crank my amp high enough to hear myself and to be heard.
Seriously, pre-gain is just on the limit, so that the clip led will occationally light on the loudest notes. Power amp gain is usually between 12 o'clock and 3 o'clock, so 5-7 on scale of 1 to 10. But it really does not make any sense to compare the settings on different amps. Most amps will start distorting well before noon, while others (like mine) are just getting to the "zone" at that point.

my numbers are irrelevant since we may not have the same gear, but my gain is usually 11 o'clock and the master is at 12 o'clock for normal use, but I think 1 o'clock master would be safe for an eden wt550 w/9volt active guitar maxed and a 4 ohm load.... 2-12"s....

I like this thread it seems interesting
I always say lots of headroom = good
and if you have to turn up more then halfway your under powered IMO
I have the Marshall VBA 400 and the 4X12 VBC cab- with my Marcus I have the bass on full, the gain a little past halfway and the master on about 35%
Unbelivable warmth- can hear myself perfectly- I play in a big soul band with brass etc and people always comment about my tone.
More headroom than I need but I just love that tube warmth ( and power)
With my Warwick Thumb NT the gain is a little under halfway- more modern sounding but still very warm.
Anyone needing ( or using ) more than this is either in a death metal band or insane!

My Mesa 400+ has the 12AU7 preamp driver substitution/mod, so while I might have the input on 7 and the master on 5 I really have no idea what this would be the equivalent to with the original 12AX7 tube. I suspect about 3????
I voted, 5. But I have several amps, and all kinds of other gain stages in the line, so really I haven't a clue, but 5 is middle of the road, and that's where I drive.

My input volume = almost halfway so 4.5 I guess
Master volume about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way up so approx 2.5 - 4 ??
The amp gets too painful over 5 on master volume however my 610 seems to be able to handle it, my 410 starts to flub/fart out at anything over 4 but thats pretty loud, earplug grabbingly loud.
