I wear my 6 string between waist and stomach, my five a little lower.

To this I saw screw you. I'm so sick of "Jazz Cats" and the like putting down hard rock/ heavy metal players. If you think metal takes no talent then you've got a screw loose. I spent half an hour at this years NAMM show being belittled by Ken Smith who thinks he's a freakin' god. I told him to shove his overpriced crap where the sun don't shine and get over himself. And this applies to WAY too many people in the bass industry.

Show me a band with an inspiring bass player and I'll be more than happy to retract. :)

Until then, I'll just base my opinion on every metal band I've heard, which involves root-note playing while being buried in the mix by screaming guitars.

Any album by Dream Theater (progressive metal but metal none the less).

Doomsday for the Deciever by Flotsam & Jetsam

Those two bands alone should be plenty for you to chew on. Hopefully they will also deflate your ego.

As for root-note playing you've got to be freakin kidding me, what about all of the walking bass lines in Jazz standards that are root, fifth. Or the standard 1-3-5 that is used so much in Jazz and Blues ?

What jazz standards are you referring to where the player only plays the root and fifth? Granted, on many 3/4 tunes, a root-five line with obvious embellishments sounds great, but in general, on most jazz tunes, a jazz player will NOT play only the root and fifth. So, I don't see the validity in this statement. I'm not trying to start a flame war, I'm just trying to see on what grounds you're making this statement. :-)

in reply to JAzzNFunk, i would have to agree with you. i like to play a good amount of Rock/Jazz, Funk/Jazz, Blues/Jazz, and Jazz/Jazz. i play root-fifth or 1-3-5 lines for the first turn around, usually the drummer and guitar player have the groove down by then, some times.
OK, after 2 turn arounds they are on their own at that point i play what i want. in most walking based lines i try to stay somewhat in the key hitting the dominant notes when they are within finger length.
personaly i like a lot of tension so i revolve more around the 7,6,2 and flat 2. i also love to play the tritone as a root/octave tritone just to push my luck.

Being that I don't have a huge Jazz collection I probably shouldn't have worded that the way I did. I was mostly basing that on instructional material and a few songs that we played a few years back when I was in my high school's jazz band.

Are there Jazz songs that are much more complex ? Of course there are. I just felt that that statement applied just as much to Jazz which is highly praised as it did to Metal which is constantly put down.

Just defending the music I love against people who make unedjucated statements about it, which I'm sure is what you were doing with Jazz.

You know, this thread IS about where you wear your bass. And maybe it's beause I'm slightly drunk right now, but, does it really ****ing matter? People get all pissed off about one comment about metal and the whole thing gets out of whack? You play what you play and that's all ther e is to it. i dont carte if you play metal or whatever. it just doesn't matter. we're all playing music, right? who cares?


p.s. dream theater is good, i dunno if they're "mteal" or not. i'm thinking metal is slayer and sepultura, you know what i mean

It didn't matter at all until you made it matter by making a stupid comment. I don't get pissed off when people say things about metal, what does piss me off is the stereotype that some people keep using about there being no talented players in metal.

BTW you kept it going by asking for examples, which I gave you. Seems like you've been beat, which wasn't my intention per say. Hopefully this will make you think before using a stereotype again.

er, Steve Harris is a "metal" player, isn't he? and he wears his bass pretty low ("balls" being the category listed, and balls is probably what all the jazzers say to this way of wearing/playing a bass), and his basslines venture away from root-note hogging. and since he's the one doing the mixing his bass is probably the loudest thing in Iron Maiden.
