I play it at waist level... Lower is uncomfortable on my fret hand. I used to like to put my bass down lower.... sheesh, that was in the 80s.

You know for a beginner I sure have been playing a long time. :p

I play a fairly large bodied bass, and my bass's bottom is covering my balls, and the top horn's about mid chest height, so I guess waist would be where to go, right?

I play ska/punk and some jazz by the way... mainly just what I think sounds good, which generally matches up to the ska type sound more or less.

btw, I agree that metal's bad. The most it is talented is playing fast, which isn't very hard. Anyone can play straight through measures at lightening speeds, but try to play a more complicated measure at fast speeds... that's where the talent is...

Tell me who's better at bass? (random metalhead bassist) or Jaco Pastorius?

I'd say Jaco.

Gosh it sounds like you've heard of three metal bands. There are more. Some metal bands play simple riffs, and some play more complex ones. Ever hear of Mr Big?

I am so tired of hearing this guy's name. So many people just throw it out there like they know him personally. I say Nikki Sixx is better because he played with his boots on fire.

Yeah I know... so would most people. But Metal, Jazz, Rock, Classical, Funk, Blues, Ska, Punk ... etc etc ... is all the same. Music. Every song is it's own animal. No reason to generalize because it boils down to personal taste rather than fact.

Christ this is gonna get me nailed but I can't sit back and watch the name Jaco being thrown around either.

Jaco's most "inspiring/best/whatever you wanna call it" work was in many's opinion "Portrait of Tracy" correct ?

I listented to it awhile back and it blows, it's a bunch of seemingly random harmonics, half of which don't project very well and seem to have been missed. Plus it follows no groove or anything that I consider to be musical.

If you like him great many people do. But if Jaco is the end all and be all of Bass playing then I better switch my instrument now because to put it bluntly, I think he sucked.

...nothing against the guy personally. I am sure he is a fine bassist. My only gripe is the following:

It's a good thing Jaco breathed or I guess we would all be dead. I mean that since he is the numero uno bass god of the universe responsible for all that's good and just in the world we all have to eat, drink and breathe Jaco, right? Otherwise how could we call ourselves bassists?

I don't mean this to be a heavy rant. I know that he is brought up a lot because he was very tallented and influenced people a lot. That's cool. I just hate hearing the name thrown at everything.

to my wife: "Hey Honey, should I go to work today?"

her answer: "Would Jaco have done it?"

Yes, let's bass our lives on this man.

Seriously, he is just a human man.

Holy smokes!

That was a rant. I knew I shouldn't have had those 20 cups of coffee today.

Sorry about my last post, I leave it for humor purposes... Although I do hate seen peoples say, "Well Jaco this and Jaco that" I haven't really seen Jaco's name posted that much recently. It must have been the coffee. *twitch* *twitch*

Just for the record, I voted waist, but its really just above my waist. Too high and I really look like a goob and can't , too low I look like a goob AND I can't play. I'm pretty sure I look like a goob and can't play any way I go, but I gotta do everything I can to look good and sound decent.
