i put balls but really i wear it a little higher about in between waist and balls but that's cause my arms are kinda long and freakish. the only time i have it higher is if i wanna slap really hard and fast just cause i can watch my hand position better not that i have more control either way cause i can do the same at the lower position.

it varies fo me, i like it low, kindof balls if i had any but when i am playing walking lines for jazz stuff i like it a little higher so i can have complette freedom of movemyment heh hhe. i need a new strap cos it snapper while i was playing, it was csray, i thoiught my aby might die but i saved her.

well, i'd say i had my guitar over my balls. but i don't have any!!! goodness... you couldn't have said below the waist or anything? as much as i'd uh... never mind. actually, it varies. depending on what song it is, how fast i have to play it, who i'm playing with. when i'm by myself havin' fun or practicing, my guitar is low, hangin' over my "balls". if it's a song that i'm just now learning and need to beware of where my fingers are, then it's on my waist. but i've just started learning the bass! it's my baby!!! i'm so in love with it. and i'm still experimenting to see what's comfortable!

Well, like any good car wreck, I saw that there were 5 pages devoted to how high you wear a bass and I was drawn in.

I play in the same position sitting or standing, for me it's the easiest way to play. At the beginning I did an experiment and found that:

a) when I slung the bass low it was more difficult than:

b) wearing it around the waist/chest area.

hmmmm...what should I do, I pondered...look cool or play comfortably?

What a quandry.

I'm not knocking anyone who wants to do anything for any reason, for me comfort and optimum playability won out. I know....boring;)

Do whatcha gotta do.

Actually, I think it looks cooler to have your bass slung around your waist than your balls/knees. I think with it too low you just look really pathetic.
The reason I have my around my waist is mostly due to strap length, though. I have it set to the shortest it'll go, and it just so happens to hang around my waist. Damn Americans are too big! They need to make some straps targeted at us smaller people! :D:p

Sheepman, just get a leather strap and cut it to size. I have to cut mine almost in half, and I'm 1,87m ;)
I would, but:
1) I'm too lazy
2) The straps here are either too skinny or not padded enough
3) I'd order more of these straps from Musician's Friend, only the billing address has to be in the US. :(
4) I'm comfortable with my bass hanging where it is now, so it's all good. :)

Sheepman, I had the same problem as you when I used my strap locks, they went so damn far down. But now I just use my regular strap again so it fits me better, and I play so the bottom of the body is covering my balls. And the top of it comes about mid tummy. (my bass has a large body)

For straps themselves? I'd never use anything other than a DiMarzio strap. :D

Actually, angus you'll notice it does. Strap locks have two pieces that are about 3-4" long that attach to the screws (and are not removeable without unscrewing the buttons)

And then it's like having another strap on top of that, so the strap will go way further down, and you also lose a good portion of your ability to tighten it up higher, since if you tighten it up as tight as it'll go, it'll hit the plastic clip. Where the regular strap will just go down to the leather (or whatever it is at the end)

I vote Chest but in fact it's in between chest and waiste.
Over my big belly so it makes a nice angle (bass tends to face me) ... easier that way to look at the neck, the pots, my feet ... ;)
In fact, i'm changing position of my bass once or twice a year (only for a few centimeters higher or lower) because I've never found, in nearly 13 years of bass playing, the "right" position.
Am I the only one ?

I voted chest too, but actually it's the same height as when I am setting down, on my lap. I was playing at my waist, but changed, since I practice with it sitting on my lap. Now it seems consistant when playing, and it's more comfortable on the wrist. Plus, I have to say I enjoy reading the articles, they gave me a good chuckle, like the one about, the length for posing.

Actually, I bet someone said that it looks better to pose with the bass at your ankles (well, below the waist) but actually, I think it looks better with it around your waiste area or above. I mean, would you rather see your ankles and your bass, or you and your bass?

Think about it. :p
