This one really depends, even doh I voted "Waist". I have 2 basses which I use for band rehersal and shows. I'm in a new-metal band and I use my Modulus Q5 and my Salas Custom 4. Now, for my Salas Custom 4, i can play the songs and I can reach around my fretboard by putting the bass off my waist area(maybe a teeny bit lower). but when i goto the Modulus Q5, Since I use the B(tund to A) alot, I put it up near my Chest area, maybe a bit lower than that. Now near the chest for a metal band, that does not look cool. but Oh wellz :D

Pretty high. I voted chest, though its more like "high stomach". The worse my hand condition gets, the higher it goes. Though, before i hurt it, i still didn't go low, mainly because theres no point! I play "metal", but I would NEVER compromise my playing just to look "cool." Im not trying to look cool, im trying to play well. So, high it is.

Chaoslord, calm down man! Rick's right (though i dont think he actually said this), there are a LOT better players in Jazz than "metal", 100 times over (and then some). If i want good playing, i listen to Jazz, not "metal". Jazz is much more musically deep and enlightening, too!

Fetis...no. No. Brian Marshall and Sam Rivers do not even BEGIN to compare to any slew of Jazz players, and i would sure hope they dont represent "metal"!

hehe, you think too much.

i wear mine at my balls, maybe a tad higher. My strap is a little higher than the lowest setting.

And about the metala/jazz thing. Metal is one of my favorite styles of music, along with punk. Now why is it that jazz is always considered "better" than punk or metal? Different? Of course. Better? Well, that's a matter of opinion. No matter how much you say that jazz is better, or metal is better, there are going to be people that will always like either one more. We all have opinions. Instead of saying our opinion is better than someone elses, how bout we just accept that theirs are different, so we can move along with our lives and have a lot more time to play bass? Isn't what this is all about?

....Sorry for my rantings...hope this isn't too off topic, just trying to clear some stuff up.

I voted waist, but on a really cold day it's probably closer to my balls. I kinda vary between those positions ...

It's easier for me to get around the high neck with it higher - but i don't need to. I'd just be dropping the bum outta the rock, and I'd get all sorts of dirty looks. I feel a bit too constricted with it higher anyway.

I think it looks better low, in general (though there are those who can make a high bass look good). Much as it might seem shallow to worry about cosmetics, if i think i look goofy, I feel goofy. And given what i play, there's no call to go higher - I'm plenty comfortable as is.

Rock music definitely has a cosmetic element, anyway: whether you wanna admit it or not people are assessing what you look like on stage ( I sometimes prefer to deny it :)). I like it low, but not so low it limits my options or hurts me.

I wear mine with the lower horn of the bass right above my waist.. but I may start wearing the bass higher, after an accidental experiment I did last night at practice. One of the straplock buttons on my Jazz bass came loose and fell off (I think the screw is stripped) so I was forced to play sitting down. And I played better, accuracy-wise. So, I'm going to try adjusting my strap so I can approximate this position of the bass while standing.

If music quality was rated by difficulty, then I guess as a general rule jazz is harder to play. But I hate to classify that much... one mans trash is another mans treasure, right? Who cares how many different notes/scales/positions are being played? I like jazz but I love rock. So to me, rock is superior. But it is only superior to me because I enjoy it more. Naturally to a guy who enjoys jazz more the reverse will be true. (I am not trying to pick any fights with you drugged out hippie jazz fiends or anything...) hehe ;)

I added a rope to my strap to make it longer,
i play at my knees, maybe a little above,
kinda like krist novoselic, and people ask me if
its hard on my wrist, but i said no cuz my fingers and arms are long enuff that my pinky can make it up to the e string no problem even high on the neck,
and it looks cool
