How I make my renderings...

I am new to bass building. I've had a strong interest for a few years and have always been scared of the neck. I know this must be a stupid question, but what do you use the rendering for? and how does it help you with the actual build? Is it scaled to an actual size. I use photoshop to edit photos.

The rendering isn't used to help with the build from a technical standpoint. I mainly make the renderings so that my customers can get an idea of what the finished product would look like. I try to make it as accurate as possible and to scale, but would never use it for actual building.

So, how do you get your templates to look like the render? Looking at your templates, do you free hand the shape? I guess my question is more on the lines of how do you make a full scale template of your bass to get started. I check out your site and I learn a lot by just looking at your pictures; it makes sense. I am guessing you find your center line and go from there. I have a bass, should I take measurement from it to gain understanding of the size? And, what thickness of MDF are your templates.. Thanks for the info truly.

For the body, you can scale up your rendering so that the body is between 12-13" wide (or whatever bass you prefer). For the neck, I would make a full size mdf template based on the nut and bridge string spacing. The headstock can be done the same way as the body. I use 1/2" mdf for all my templates, it gives enough thickness for the router and so it isn't flimsy.

Thanks for the info. Maybe the last question? When cutting your neck and headstock, to you like cutting from thin board and fliping the headstock for the angle, or cutting the headstock and neck from one larger piece with the angle. Or, do you like the flat Fender style head stock? Which sounds better and why do you pick one over the other. I have seen them different ways. And, at which pitch or angle do you use? I am reading between 10-20 degrees.

You're sure this is about how you make your renderings? FYI: I've seen a topic about this lately, maybe you can find it ;)

JC Thank you for your input, it was helpful. As far as for you... since you don't know where it is you are no help :hmm:

Well, I do know where it is. But it seemed you went off topic on a sticky thread about renderings, using it to ask all different kind of questions. I sensed you were not familiar with the forum rules (e.g. first search than ask) and I thought I'd point it out to you in a kind way.

There was a topic about your question called 'scarf joints' just a few weeks ago. If you type 'scarf joints' in the search box it will be your third hit:

Good luck on TB! :bassist:

Point taken
I apologize for messing up the group’s format and rules. I would love to build a bass; I’ve turned pens, bowl, and have made jewelry boxes and entertainment stands. I play bass a little and really love wood. After opening the list of threads, Jared’s’ link was the only thing that made sense, except the tools because I understand adobe Photoshop. I thought that it was a link that helped with the templates. I also went to his site and he documented the process a lot clearer than any of the information I had seen so I asked a few questions that I needed to help with to get me going. If I had of know to look for a scarf joint, I would have. Again, I apologize for the redirection I will try to do a better job on my research.
