How long before you gig a new bass.

Out of curiosity, what was it, and what changed between what you heard/felt in the shop, and when you got it home? I know first hand that Mike is pretty cool with you playing anything in his showroom to your heart's content.

....or was it something you bought from him remotely without playing first?

I bought it used right here on TB. Both the guy I bought it from and the bass were great. Craftsmanship was nothing short of superb.

I am a physical player. I expect the bass to respond to differences in my playing. This bass is designed (in my view) for players with flawless technique who want the bass itself to do the heavy lifting of their tone. No matter how I played it, it sounded exactly the same. My technique was all but removed from the tone.

I'm a good player. That was a well-built bass. We just didn't get along. I have nothing negative to say about the bass.

I have a Chinese Warwick Corvette, that I've played for years and I have the same complaint about it. Because I only used 5 string in one of my projects, and it wasn't one where differences in bass tone needed to be all that dynamic, I stuck with it for a long time. Recently, my needs and wants changed a bit, and I finally got a different 5 string. Not a problem anymore. The Warwick is a perfectly good bass (not at the level of the Lull obviously), but just not for me, and for the same reasons. Kinda looking to sell it, as I have my 5 string needs filled better now.

First thing, if I got it online and not from a store, it's going to need to get the setup looked at.

Then I need to see how it sits in the mix with my amp and my band(s). Not taking anything out on stage until I've at least run it through practice to shake out any issues or adjustments that need to be made.

I usually gig with it ASAP. I only had one bad experience with an old Zon Sonus. I had just got it delivered and played it sitting down at home before taking it out on a gig. When I strapped it on, it had the worst neck dive of any bass I've played and I was fighting that thing all night.

I'd say same day, if I've had time with it and it feels comfortable and I know the controls. I'd definitely bring a backup tho til I trusted it. But I'd bring a backup to any gig that wasn't close to the house. I generally play a it as much as I could before I paid for it, so I'm halfway there when I get it home. Then play it at home through my setup.

Does that make any kind of sense??

I brought a Sadowsky M5-24 to the dress rehearsal for a musical I was playing the day I received it. Brought my new Roscoe 6 string to a jazz combo gig the day I received it as well - although I had played it at the Roscoe shop the week before.

So, do you wait to "get to know" the new fish or do you just get wet?

Generally I take them to a rehearsal first.
