How long before you gig a new bass.

I've been playing for about 24 years now and from all of the bases I've owned, only three were bought new, and brought to gig asap.

My first Rick ever was a model 4000. Had a gig that very night, this was back around '95-'96. Had no intention of even buying a bass that day, Go into Guitar Crazy in PDX, there it is. Took it home, played it for few minutes. Gigged it that night.

I like to fool around with it, figure out what tones I can get out of it, where the deep thud is, the clanky treble and all of that. Then I'll take it to rehearsal and see how it fits in. It took about two months to gig my Jack Cassidy because of the wide variety of sounds and the occasional off sounds from my bad left hand technique. It will punish bad technique. My Ibanez AFB200 hollowbody was the same.

However long it takes for me to do a complete setup (to include fine-tuning my amp to the new bass' tone). So, a week or less depending on work schedule.

That's about it for me too. All I need is to plug it in and make sure it works before gigging it. Maybe tweak the setup, but that's only if it needs it, and if there's enough time before I have to pack it up to head to the gig.

as soon as its setup for me by me --- usually, this is a same day process.....I have bought basses in the past that required more love and attention than time allowed (or both) in which its debut was postponed a day or two

How about:
Guy brings bass to gig. I play it during sound check. Buy it on the spot. Play the rest of the gig with it. At end of gig different guy offers more than I paid. Sold.

I bought a MIM P on the way to a gig, owned it for 20 minutes before it hit the stage.

Swapped it heads up the next day for a Geddy Lee Jazz.

Depends. If I got it the day of a gig, that sucker's going to work and earn its keep that night. If several days later, I'll wait until then.

Nope. thought maybe there would be som people who needed to "bond/get to know" the bass before they felt comfortable - maybe going from a 4 to a 6 or something like that.

Well, that's me! I find it does take a while to 'bond' with a new bass. Especially if it's a different number of strings; string spacing; has a different tonal quality I need to discover to match the music I'm playing.

Same day. Just did it last Friday with a new-to-me Epi Jack Cassidy. Took a sec to get the EQ right, but that was it. The only real glitch was I forgot about my strap locks, and only had the one strap. But it was a sit-down gig, anyway.
