How long have you been playing bass?

I was there when on the 8th Day God created the bass and was there when later on he handed it to Moses along with the on the 10 Commandments and said "Son, layeth down thy groove."
It seems like this has always been a very popular question to ask new musicians we meet.
It also seems that this question is, for the asker to get a basic idea of how experienced you are in a sense.
I've found that I personally don't care for this method of probing ones ability, so I don't ask.
But for when I am asked, and depending on how the question is worded, I've got some well thought out sarcastic replies for when it comes up.
So to answer your question....
What do you mean years, no one can play for that long.
The most I can do is only about 5 hours at best.
Years? I don't know I lost count at around 10,000 hours.

Well that's not a very nice question to ask a lady.
That's about all I've got right now.
10,000 hours is 416 and 2/3 days, a little less than one year and two months. So not all that long, although that does represent continuous playing...
So let's say it averages out to one hour a day. 10,000 days is roughly 27 years, which is a long time!
I started Christmas, 1980, so 30 years, I'm working on my 31st. I keep hoping I'll get good, too. Someday!

not 30+ but I can't believe I'm in the 15-20 category ... feel soooooooo old
You're kidding me....I wish I were in the 15-20 category. That would make me 30 again.
Started seriously playing @ 1982 after I got a black 4001 for my birthday. I "lost the coin toss" and picked up the bass out of necessity from jamming with some school buddies....
Got lucky enough to make a decent living at it from mid '80's through '99...but then took a voluntary leave from all playing due to a tragic family incident...
Just started playing again in March and find myself "feeling like a kid" again...

Switched from guitar to bass in '97 so it's been 14 years. Still pick up a guitar every so often but my heart belongs to bass!
Two weeks from now will be the 30th anniversary of my first paying gig on bass. Ah, I remember it like it was only 27 years ago...
43 years this summer. Started on a friends borrowed Kalamazoo. Still trying after all these years
started in 1965, so 46 years or so ago. However, I took about 20 years off in the middle there to raise 3 kids, so I don't think you can count all those 46 years.
I aslo started playing upright bass in 6th Grade Orchestra at my NYC Middle School...now I am 40. I am tempted to post a then and now photo but I dont want to be the first to make a fool of myself.
