How long have you played? :)

Got my 1st guitar Christmas '67, was playing coffee houses summer '68. Played cello in school fall '68 thru '70. Played with 1st band in a bar 1969, first "tour" summer 1971 6 weeks of one niters Texas to Florida & back. Fall 1970 got stuck on bass in school but still played guitar in bands until 1976 when i made the switch.

41 years ago got my first guitar at 12, a Sears classical, which I tore the finish off the front learning stuff like Pinball Wizard and Led Zeppelin on. Later that year I got my first bass, a Univox fiddle bass that was so neck heavy. Picked up a Sunn tube head and 2-15 cab off a friend and got my first P Bass, a fretless, brand spanking new.

Played in bands and churches, even a Billy Graham crusade, right there in the little town of Greenville IL.

Played pretty steady till I was in my 20's in several bands but had a family and no-one around who wanted to play. Same old people who would always quit just when we were going good. Sold most of my stuff to pay bills (Dumb#$#) but kept an acoustic guitar to pluck around on.

Moved to Georgia 10 years ago and met up with a group at church who needed a bass player. Stopped at the local pawn shop and found a MIM P Bass with a broken nut that need some TLC. Pieced together a bass amp and off we go again.

In the mean time I built an explorer type guitar (not a bad guitarist, which complements my bass playing) and a fretless bass. Built a shop to build guitars and basses, or at least learn how to, LOL!

Started at 12. Fist gig at 13. Played/gigged for about 12 years (jams, parties-lots, high schools/colleges, clubs, local concerts) then just jammed off and on for 30. Picked it up again about 3 years ago. Been strumming my acoustic 6 string all these years though.

Started out playing a borrowed bass (can't remember what it was) in a small dance combo in high school, '69, because we already had a trumpet player. Played for 2 1/2 years, self-taught. Went to college, majored in music on trumpet, life happened, got completely out of the business. Fantasized out loud about playing again to my wife, who gifted me a bass & amp for my birthday(!!) four years ago. Joined the band 3 1/2 years ago. Took lessons for almost a year - will take more when I have the $$ - and am loving it!

Going to go practice now - -

Hi everyone, first post here... been reading & enjoying TB for a while though!

So, about two years ago, the bassist left our band and we decided I should take on bass instead of rhythm guitar (on which I sucked anyway), the logic being that "no one listens to bass anyway and a band can get away with good guitar and not so good bass rather than vice versa"... Well, I'm still not very good on bass (and suck on guitar), but probably good enough for our band ;)

After guitar, percussion and didgeridoo I think I finally found my instrument. I try to play/practice at least 60 minutes daily. And the more I play, the more I like it!
