The world is turning into a sad place when a simple phone call can seem like an intrusion on other's lives. What did you do before then invention of the cold and impersonal internet and email and texts?
When I was growing up you had only a few options, the phone, a letter or a knock on the door. Get over it OP, nothing to fear but the phone call itself.

It's not sad, it's just different. Why call people when you can get right to the point with a text or an email? Some people add a lot of unnecessary fluff when they talk on the phone and it's annoying. Maybe I'm just apathetic, but I really don't care about whatever small talk people use to make a phone call seem "worth while".
I might just be a jerk though, I don't really like for people to show any kind of emotion towards me. This is why I play bass.

Phone phobia. I totally have this. It's a result of working phone tech support. I totally get it, OP. But (and you already know this, just beating the dead horse some more) you gotta call. With everything. Emails and texts get ignored. Musicians are flakes. So you gotta reach out and be annoying.
I'm willing to adjust to the "under 25" crowd, but not in this area, and the OP is not from that generation.
When it comes to a job offer, a date with a woman that has potential, or anyone else that you respect....you make a phone call. I will teach my son this and not back down. Texting and Facebook are social fodder and BS, IMO....not meaningful interaction.

I respect people enough to not call them. opening lines for phone calls should be "hey I just wanted you to stop everything you are doing because I'm special and I can't figure out how to text on my phone".
FWIW, I recently put a variety Top 40 cover band together and we do a healthy amount of horn songs, over 50% feature a three-piece section.
I've worked with a lot of horn players, but it was a challenge getting a solid line-up I could count on, and I still need a depth-chart in case one is unavailable. The good horn players in my neighborhood rarely stick with only one project.
For that reason, sometimes it takes a couple of tries to get a reply to an e-mail or return phone call from some of these horn players. I don't mean to stereotype, and I'm sure it varies from place to place, but around here good horn players who are willing to play pop/rock are in-demand and a little idiosyncratic.

Back then you could also only answer the phone when you where available. The 24/7 mobile phone availability is an intrusion, but it's not the caller's fault.
A mobile call can be ignored just as easily as a call to a phone wired to the wall. It can be muted immediately, or completely silenced.
Translated: "How dare you expect me to focus on one thing at a time. Don't you know I'm on FB, TB, Instagram and playing a game".
Sure I do this, but some people feel the need to be avaible all the time and then are annoyed by people calling. Ex-colleague of mine was that way.
That's on them. It certainly doesn't imply any rudeness or expectations of the caller.
Yeah that's what I said. I think it's socio-electronical problem if you can call it that way. Companies make people believe you have to cling to your phone all day else you miss something.
I'm one of those who are reluctant to talk over the phone. Seem to have trouble understanding people when I can't see them talk. Asking the person on the opposite end to repeat their last statement three times in a row gets old pretty fast...
Advantage of text based (text/email) communication is that it leaves a record for later reference. Also eliminates the possibility of mishearing stuff, IF everyone types clearly.
