This is pretty interesting post, I know a lot of people that have this issue, they have a lot of rigs, basses and amps, some of theme because they really don't know what they are looking for and some just because like to collect.
For me, I like to have different basses for different tone styles but this doesn't mean that I have 20 basses, I prefer to have 4-5 basses that resume all the different kind of tones that todays are available, because at the end, the basses I use are always the same. Other staff are just collection tools or a rare use ones.
For amp when you have a couple of preamp style tones that can offer different sounds possibility what do you need more?
Amp and cabs just depending from what kind of live/studio gig you play!
