2 bands at the moment. Had an offer for a 3rd. Think I'll give them a go see what they're like. Not sure if I can juggle 3 bands and a full time job though. See how it goes.
1 gigging band that plays out one or possibly two times per month and rehearses once a week.
1 weekly basement jam session.
1 whenever-we-can-herd-the-cats basement jam session. That might be once a month or once every six months, depends when everyone is available. The guy that runs it only wants to do it on weeknights (Mon-Thu), he and another guy travel a lot for work, one guy does shift work so his schedule is always changing, and another guy and myself have regular commitments to other groups so we are only both available on Mondays. That makes it really hard to pick a date to play but it's a lot of fun when we do. The guys are all really good players and eveyone does their homework so the first time through most songs we're already at about 90-95%. I'm not as green a newbie as I was when I first started playing with them, but they're still far more experienced than I am and I still learn from playing with them. And, because it's so infrequent, it doesn't really impact the other groups I play with. So it's worth it to me to stick with this group.

The number of bands I'm in is the same as the number of basses I own: less than my wife thinks. And it's best if it stays that way.
Bands seem to come and go. The answer is usually somewhere between two and five. Right now it's two or three, depending on whether you call that thing that practices a few times a year for the occasional gig a band or not.
Honestly, I sometimes wish it were zero.

I'm happy about this only because I'm making WAAAAY more money than I ever have before with music, and my band has roadies
. Yes that roadie thing is me bragging. But I am grateful and do feel I've earned it.

Update from two years ago ... I'm in one band now. The same band I've been playing with since 2010. I'm cool with it.

I do play at church, but we rotate through-mostly I'm on bass, but sometimes on guitar.
And we don't have set line ups we rotate through
Some want to play once a month, others more often, some less often--so set lineups wouldn't work.
But I was sort of in an ad hoc band over the last few years--but it wasn't a formal real band, we just played a couple of talent shows over a period of a few months-and then it fell apart due to people moving, time constraints & family stuff (Good stuff, so no complaint about that)
It was never intended to last any way--but who knows--we may play again.
& recently an old friend emailed me about getting together to jam_we've never played music together.
And a drummer wants to get together with me and a guitar player that we used to jam a lot & we recorded some home demos as well.
We'll see what happens--there is no plan for anything other than fun, but still I am looking forward to the possibility of jamming more often.
