Btw. Does anyone else remember when Anthony Jackson and Randy Jackson (I think it was those guys) had a public argument about one or many basses in Bass Player magazine? Sometime during early nineties I think.

Two electrics, a P-style 4 with tapes and a Warwick 5 with rounds. I own two others but one is always lent out to others and one is a fretless that I'm about to trade.
I have a lot of basses (now reduced to 14) as habit for session-work over the years....i still do sessions but they are few and far between these days. I usually bring three to seven for calls (I always ask what genre before I go)
Live is different: I have two 5ver primaries (Sire V7-5 and American Jazz Deluxe V) for variety work and two pointy 4-strings (Ibanez DTB-400 and Fernandes BXB55) for rock. The other basses may make an occasional appearance live if the strings are fresh enough (and roundwounds - I have basses strung with different strings for sessions but I only use rounds live)

I have 8 and have gigged 6. I usually rotate which one gets played. If we play a festival then I play the ones I built or my walnut Ric. Bar gigs get my P bass or Epi Thinderbird 4 pro model.
Well, pretty much depends on what kind of music I perform. I use my 5 string only when necessary, my fretless mostly for Big Band gigs and mostly my 4 string bass.

A few are from when I was a wee lad and are sentimental. 3 are just bases I always wanted. 3 I play out. I'd play more but I work full time plus OT I go to night school and I have a new born. At this point it's kind of a collection that gets a lot of home use and everyone gets to come to band practice get some play time. I also have 12 at this time. But like I said 6 of those are either from my teenage years or gifts. Consequently 5/6 are ibanez
To comprehesively breakdown my stash:
Ibanez agb140 bought to play acoustically around the baby, turned into the living room noodle bass
Ibanez 305, Gio, Tmb301, Acoustic all bought when I was a teenager or a gift. All nice but are just kind of there. They all get picked up from time to time. The TMB is my wife's.
Yamaha Rbx170y an older union brother found I play and had this as a project so it was gifted to me.
Stingray, 4003, sterling US SUB stay home. The US SUB just hasn't made it out yet, it will. They ray will also eventually make it out. The 4003 I don't care for and will probably be getting traded when it come back from the luthier.
EBMM Sterling, built jazz bass and built Pbass. One is my favorite bass ever, the other two were specifically out together to be workhorses.
Hoping one of the low end basses peaks my kids interest when old enough. Then when they smash it up, who cares right?

Even when I owned 20+ basses I used one. It would change every once in a while, but mostly I would use one for everything until I moved on to the next. Maybe it's because I'm generally happy with my sound and not looking to copy anyone else's.
I have four upright basses. They all get gigged. I’ve got kind of a mini travel bass which I use when in a really cramped space or traveling or just not feeling like moving gear. An old king Mortone plywood For outdoor gigs and any venue that feels like it might be a threat to the welfare of my instrument. 7/8s czech bass I call Old Faithful which is what I play when I need to get the job done and hold my own so to speak. And lastly a big old Italian bass that I call the bad mofo. It sounds awesome, but it’s a really big and awkward thing to move and play. So I generally only take it where I know it’s going to be a situation where the sound will be appreciated.
I tend to stick to my main guy. Currently the main guy is in the shop for fret work, so I'm playing the recently acquired backup. It's got 18mm spacing vs 19 on my main, so it's a little awkward. Trying to trade it for something with 19mm spacing (see the classifieds, Yamaha trbx505, nice bass).
I got a great deal on a squier jaguar HB which I played at a gig the night I bought it (perhaps a bad move to play a 4 string after years of only playing a 5). But other than that I don't usually switch it up. that's really only cuz I have had only one 5er before i got the Yamaha. And when the brute is back in the stable the Yamaha goes from "for trade" to "for sale". And I will get a second 5er with spacing I'm comfortable with. Eventually someone is building me a custom guy but not sure when that will exist.

I have 5 basses and I'm gigging with 4 of them. I will start including in the rotation the fifth one as well. Jazz/Rock/Blues on...
I’m finally at the point of ordering a custom built bass from a local luthier. I own 13 basses - 4 are perfect, the other 9 are kinda close.
I used to rotate basses quite alot and every bass get's gigged occasionally but I've settled into "regulars". Of my 5 basses, 3 are "regulars" and live in their cases. 1 and 2 (P and J) are in a double bag and go to every country gig and the third (4-94 style Carlo) goes to Church.
The 4th and 5th are my main instruments for playing at home
-The 4th is a Wendler fretless and gets gigged from time to time when I want something different.
-The 5th is a T-40 that I use for recording and very rarely, for very short gigs.

In my tribute band I will play the modded P bass in my picture. I have another P which I'll use as a backup.
In my original project, which is mostly Drop D tuned, I'll use the same P bass. Soon we will be exploring in Drop C tuning for that project, so I'm going to start using one of my five string basses for thst project as well.
So at this point, I could get away with just using three basses. I have about 18, so I suppose it's time to sell a few thst have been sitting in cases for a while.
