Five (I'm suddenly in a category that's not single numbers - the ominous "five to nine..."). And I continue to insist that each has its unique role to play.

John Toon custom active five-string (main gigging bass)
Carvin SB4000 - passive, fretted, four-string (all purpose, really)
Yamaha BB415 - passive, fretted, five-string, with flats (mostly for old-school tones)
Washburn AB10 - four-string ABG with DR Black Beauties (used in church and some library open-mic type things)
Aria Pro II SLB-2 - four-string, defretted, also with black beauties (for fretless fun, and also my tinkering project).

I also have a cheap beater acoustic/electric guitar, an old beat-up mandolin, and an Epiphone Les Paul Studio.

Funny peeking back at this thread after three years. I still have five. Three of them are the same ones I had three years ago - the Toon, the Carvin, and the Yamaha. The Washburn AB10 has been replaced by a Godin A4 fretless. I still have the pieces of the Aria but I've taken it apart and messed with it (and messed it up) so much it no longer counts as a functional bass. I also have a Frankenfender P bass - MIM P body, a Squier James Johnston J neck, aftermarket tort PG and Schaller bridge (stolen from the disemboweled Aria).

Oh, and I still have the beater A/E and the mandolin, but the Les Paul has been replaced by a Godin Session Custom.

Funny you should ask, as I was thinking about this when I was listing my current collection.
When someone asks what my favorite brand of bass is, I always answer Spector or Rickenbacker, yet I own more Fenders than any other single brand.
I think the reason for this is because they are, imho, versatile, comfortable, ergonomic and road-worthy.

I would have to say at this point I'm a USA Lakland guy. I've yet to play a higher end Spector. I do have a Warwick Thumb that I really like. I also owne a Rick. I had a American deluxe jazz that was super nice, but it was a 4 string and I'm really loving the 5'rs

At two at the moment. After years of playing warwicks and musicmans I've found I really enjoy the emg 35dc and 40dc loaded ESP basses for my originals band.

that doesn't sound so serious. i play guitar because they are guitars. basses are basses. it's the furniture that's taking up space!!!
