For me personally? Intent was always different "tools". A PJ and a J electric for tonal variety options/back up with an acoustic for non amplified playing. May eventually add a fretless and 5 string which are obviously very different tools as well.

That all said, our "tone" is pretty much at the mercy of the sound man and how he decides to set us. I like a clean piano tone, but cant tell you how may times I have hit a bass fill early in a set and hear grit. Bedroom tone is all well and good, but IMO it comes down to playing a bass that feels good doing the job you need it to do. Tone chasing hasn't been a motivation for my gear purchases for quite some time.

I'm up to seven again, all with flats except the J-bass :
